Artificial Intelligence is reshaping financial services, but its success depends on the infrastructure that powers data access, control, and interoperability. This course explores how Open Banking, Open Finance, and platform-based models are transforming the design and delivery of financial services around the world.
You’ll examine how regulatory frameworks, API ecosystems, and evolving consumer expectations are enabling smarter, more personalized financial products. Building on the foundation of Open Banking, you’ll learn how Open Finance expands access to a broader set of financial data and what this means for innovation, competition, and inclusion.
Through real-world case studies, strategic insights, and global policy comparisons, this course offers a practical, forward-looking view of the open financial ecosystem. Whether you’re a policymaker, technologist, financial professional, or curious learner, you’ll come away with the context and confidence to engage with the future of AI-enabled finance.
By the end of the course, you will be able to:
• Explain the evolution of financial infrastructure from traditional institutions to open, platform-based ecosystems.
• Describe the core principles, objectives, and regulatory frameworks underpinning Open Banking and Open Finance initiatives.
• Evaluate the strategic role of data accessibility and interoperability in enabling AI applications in financial services.
• Analyse real-world case studies that illustrate how Open Finance and AI are being implemented globally.
• Identify the opportunities and challenges presented by embedded finance, disintermediation, and platform envelopment.
• Assess how emerging financial infrastructure impacts the design and deployment of intelligent, data-driven financial products.
This is the second course in the 'AI in Financial Services: Foundations through Future Trends' specialization. We recommend completing 'AI Fundamentals in Financial Services' course first for a strong foundation before exploring the technologies and strategies shaping the future of Open Finance.
Syllabus
- Introduction to Open Banking and Open Finance
- This course explores how emerging financial infrastructure like Open Banking, Open Finance, and platform-based models is enabling the next generation of AI-driven financial services. You’ll learn how standardised data access, API ecosystems, and embedded finance are transforming the way financial products are built, delivered, and personalised. As you explore the foundations of open and data-driven ecosystems, you’ll build the strategic perspective needed to effectively design and deploy AI solutions across modern financial services.
- From Open Banking to Open Finance - foundations of a data-driven future
- This module lays the foundation for understanding how Open Finance builds upon the core ideas of Open Banking. You'll explore how financial data access has evolved from limited banking data to a broader ecosystem that includes investments, insurance, pensions, and more. Through regulatory insights, real-world examples, and guided reflection, you’ll come to understand how and why Open Finance is transforming the future of financial services.
- Foundations of Open Finance - objectives, principles, and policy
- This module explores the strategic purpose of Open Finance: why it exists, who it aims to benefit, and how it is structured to operate ethically and effectively. You’ll learn about the objectives that underpin Open Finance, the principles that guide its implementation (such as consent and data portability), and the regulatory frameworks that govern participation and accountability in open data ecosystems.
- From access to action: the API layer of Open Finance
- APIs are the technical backbone of Open Finance. In this module, you’ll explore how APIs enable secure, real-time data sharing and personalised services across banks, fintechs, and other institutions. You’ll learn about the different types of APIs, from account information to payment initiation, and examine the security, compliance, and consent frameworks that ensure responsible access. The module also covers real-world examples and highlights the opportunities and implementation challenges of building with APIs.
- Open Finance in practice: regional strategies and global lessons
- Open Finance is not being implemented in the same way everywhere. This module explores how countries and regions around the world are shaping their own versions of Open Finance, based on local regulations, market dynamics, and digital maturity. You’ll compare government-led and market-led approaches, assess how global lessons are being applied (or not), and identify the key challenges and innovations emerging across jurisdictions.
- Review, reflect, and demonstrate your learning
- This final module consolidates your learning from across the course and invites you to reflect on what Open Finance means in your own context. You’ll review the big-picture shifts in data access, infrastructure, regulation, and consumer empowerment, and then apply your learning through a capstone assignment that challenges you to design an inclusive Open Finance strategy for a fictional country.
