“Chinese Folk Culture” is a dynamic, English-taught course that offers a holistic exploration of the cultural fabric of China. Through a blend of online lectures, multimedia presentations, various videos and interactive activities, you will gain a deep understanding of the key elements that define Chinese folk traditions. This course is not just about learning facts, it’s about experiencing the vibrant spirit of Chinese culture and appreciating its enduring relevance in contemporary society.

The course evaluation score is composed of three part: video lectures (40%), chapter assignments (30%) and final examination (30%).

This course is divided into six exciting modules, which will take you on a journey through the rich tapestry of Chinese traditions and customs.

1. Rites of Chinese Peoples Life

Chinese life rituals are a reflection of the profound respect for life and the natural order. From the joyous celebrations of birth, the significance of zodiac signs and names, and the meaningful ways of honoring longevity through birthday celebrations, to the solemn rites of marriage and ancestor worship, these rituals are deeply embedded in Chinese cultural identity. In this module, we will explore the symbolism, customs, and social significance of these life milestones, helping you understand how they shape individual and communal values.

2. Traditional Chinese Festivals

Chinese festivals are a kaleidoscope of colors, sounds, and traditions that bring communities together in celebration. From the bustling Spring Festival, where red lanterns light up the night and families reunite, to the poetic Mid-Autumn Festival, where moon cakes are shared under the full moon, each festival is a treasure trove of customs, legends, and unique celebrations. This module will not only deepen your understanding of Chinese culture but also connect you to the rich tapestry of stories and traditions that have shaped Chinese society for centuries. Join us and experience the joy and significance of these iconic festivals!

3. Chinese Social Life

The third module focuses on Chinese social life. Here, you will experience the elegance of Chinese tea culture, the diversity of Chinese cuisine, and the etiquette of dining. We will also touch upon some cultural taboos that are important to understand when interacting with Chinese people.

• Tea Culture: Tea is more than just a beverage in China, it is a cultural institution. We will explore the history, preparation, and etiquette of Chinese tea ceremonies, as well as the role of tea in social interactions and health.

• Dietary Culture: Chinese cuisine is renowned for its diversity and depth. This module will introduce you to the principles of Chinese cooking, regional specialties, and the cultural significance of different dishes. You will also learn about traditional Chinese dietary practices and their connection to health and well-being.

• Table Etiquette: Understanding table manners is essential for anyone interested in Chinese culture. We will cover the key etiquette rules, from seating arrangements to the use of chopsticks, helping you navigate Chinese dining with confidence.

4. Chinese Folk Games & Folk Artisanship

Traditional Chinese games and pastimes are a treasure trove of cultural wisdom and creativity. We will explore popular games such as Go(Weiqi), Chinese chess, and mahjong, as well as traditional crafts like paper-cutting and clay sculpting. These activities are not only fun but also offer a window into the values and ingenuity of Chinese society.

• Paper-cutting: Artists use scissors or knives to carve delicate designs from red paper, symbolizing good fortune and happiness. These intricate patterns are often used to decorate homes during festivals and weddings, bringing a touch of beauty and tradition to every occasion.

• New Year Paintings: These colorful and vibrant artworks depict scenes of prosperity, happiness, and mythical creatures.They are hung on doors and walls to welcome the New Year and ward off evil spirits. Each painting tells a story, blending artistry with cultural symbolism.

• Clay Figurines: Skilled artisans mold clay into lifelike figures of people, animals, and mythical beings. These figurines are not only decorative but also carry cultural significance, often representing characters from folklore or historical events.

5. Chinese Folk Literature

The fifth module will dive into the captivating world of Chinese folk literature. From the witty humor of crosstalk (Xiangsheng), the dramatic elegance of Peking Opera,  and the magical shadow puppetry, to the dynamic performances of dragon and lion dances, each art form offers a unique glimpse into Chinese culture. Join us to explore these vibrant traditions that have enchanted audiences for centuries!

• Peking Opera: This iconic art form combines music, dance, and drama to tell stories of history, legend, and folklore.We will explore the unique features of Peking Opera, including its elaborate costumes, distinctive facial makeup, and expressive gestures.

• Shadow Puppetry: Ir is a mesmerizing art that uses intricately carved leather puppets to tell stories through light and shadow.We will delve into the history and techniques of this ancient art form, as well as its role in preserving cultural heritage.

6. Chinese Folk Medicine

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is a cornerstone of Chinese cultural heritage, emphasizing the harmony between body, mind, and nature. In this module, you will learn about the principles of TCM and how some ancient practices have been used for thousands of years to maintain health and well-being. Acupuncture involves inserting thin needles into specific points to balance energy. Chinese Massage and Tui Na (pushing and grasping) use hands to relieve muscle tension. Cupping applies suction cups to skin to promote blood flow. Gua sha scrapes skin with tools to release toxins and reduce inflammation.
