Basics of Pedagogy at Secondary Stage

ABOUT THE COURSE:This course is designed to help pre-service teachers build a strong foundation in the basics of pedagogy at the secondary level. It will equip them with essential knowledge, skills, and insights needed to understand learners and to plan effective teaching accordingly. Through this course, learners will explore the concept of teaching, discover various teaching and learning strategies, and gain practical classroom management techniques. They will also develop a deeper understanding of teaching as a profession, including different approaches to teaching and diverse types of pedagogy. By the end of the course, pre-service teachers will be better prepared to become thoughtful, reflective educators who can meet the unique needs of secondary-stage students.INTENDED AUDIENCE:B.Ed. Week 1:

Understanding the learners and learner background
The physical, mental, social, and emotional growth of learners
Thought processes and cognitive skills of learners.
Psychological and social orientations of learners
Conflicts and challenges of secondary learners
Characteristics of secondary stage learners
Observing the unique capabilities of a child

Week 2:

Teaching: concept, principles, levels, maxims and characteristics.
Learning to teach: the four knowledge domains (Subject knowledge,
Pedagogical knowledge, pedagogical-content knowledge, and Knowledge of learning process & the learner.

Week 3:

Teaching strategies and learning strategies: concept, types and their relevance for a becoming teacher.
Teachers controlled instructions and learner controlled instructions.

Week 4:

Pedagogy and andragogy: Concept, scope, difference and relation.
Making classrooms inclusive and joyful learning spaces: classroom management strategies.
Programmed instructions and computer assisted instruction.

Week 6:

Types of pedagogy-
Social pedagogy and critical pedagogy
Role of pedagogy in effective learning and Its impact on the learner

The profession:
Concept and Teaching as profession
Continuous Professional development activities- seminars, conferences, orientation programmes, workshops, online and offline courses, publications, development of teaching portfolio, capacity building programmes, and teacher exchange programmes.
