ABOUT THE COURSE:Environment is everything around us and it is this “everything around us i.e. environment” that allows us to survive and grow on the planet Earth. However, population growth, industrial revolution, the human urge to invent new things and unscientific implementation of developmental plans has led to deterioration of every sphere of the environment including air, water and soil. The air we breathe, the water we drink and the soil we thrive for crop growth are all contaminated. Importantly, the category of contaminants that enter in these spheres is getting more and more diverse including microplastics, electronic waste, radioactive elements, pharmaceutical components, etc.Further, human expansion owing to population growth and expansion of urban areas, with all the facilities of transport, entertainment and job security, have led to erratic changes in land cover on the planet. There has been sharp decline in natural forest areas, fragmentation of forests, and increase in agricultural and urban land areas. Forest area reduction has also resulted in biodiversity loss. Further, all these dramatic changes in the past few centuries have resulted in the climate change, that is an ongoing process expected to worsen with time. Nonetheless, a lot of focus of world has shifted to environmental issues and actions are being taken from policy interventions to scientific and technological developments to protect environment sustainably. The proposed course aims to discuss various environmental issues, the technologies and methods available to solve those issues and policy level interventions aimed to address the issues.INTENDED AUDIENCE:B.Sc. and M.Sc. students of Environmental Science, Environmental Management, Environmental Studies and related courses, as well as other science streams including Ecology, BotanyPREREQUISITES: NoneINDUSTRY SUPPORT:Coal Mining Industries, Cement Manufacturing Industries, Leather Industries
