Explore Cataluña, the birthplace of Cava, where winemaking has long been treated as an art form and where local tradition and modern innovation exist in dynamic conversation.
Cataluña produces Spain's signature traditional-method sparkling wine using indigenous grape varieties: Macabeo, Xarel·lo, and Parellada. The region left its mark on global winemaking history as the place where the gyropalette prototype was first developed, fundamentally changing sparkling wine production around the world. The cooperative movement also found a visually striking expression here, with many facilities built as grand, soaring structures known as "wine cathedrals," stunning examples of Modernist architecture that announced that wine and art were one and the same. In Cataluña, they always have been.
