Tradition and innovation share the stage in this fascinating exploration of Spanish wine. Learn about the new wave of bold, expressive winemakers, the devoted traditionalists who guard generations of technique, and the world-class sparkling wines that round out Spain's extraordinarily diverse viticultural landscape.
The course opens with a comprehensive overview of Spanish wine: its history, regulatory framework, geography, climate diversity, native grape varieties, and both conventional and modern winemaking practices. From there, the focus narrows to one of Spain's most iconic and historically significant wine regions: La Rioja.
Rioja occupies a singular place in Spanish wine culture. It is one of the country's oldest demarcated wine regions, yet it continues to redefine itself with each passing generation. Part fortress of tradition, part laboratory for innovation, Rioja has spent centuries building a global reputation as one of the world's greatest wine-producing areas, and it remains Spain's most immediately recognized wine region among international consumers. This class explores why.
