Take a deep dive into the rich history, regional geography, and distinctive grape varieties of Spanish wine, then explore the cooler, greener coastal regions of Green Spain, where crisp Albariño, elegant Godello, and dynamic Mencía are rewriting what the world expects from Spanish winemaking.
This course traces Spanish wine from its historical roots through today, examining labeling conventions, geographic appellations, climate influences, grape diversity, viticulture, and winemaking traditions in depth. You will also explore the latest research on Spanish wine laws and new findings on the origins of the country's extraordinary array of grape varieties.
From there, the focus shifts to Green Spain, a quartet of regions (Galicia, Cantabria, Asturias, and the Basque Country) that stands apart from the red-wine identity most people associate with Spain. Local white grapes such as Albariño, Godello, Treixadura, and Hondarribi Zuri take center stage, while the compelling red variety Mencía continues to attract growing international attention. These regions are reshaping perceptions of what Spanish wine can be at its finest.
