via CourseHorse

Overview

This combined training program is designed for construction workers who have already completed the 30-hour OSHA card certification. Completion of this 8-Hour Fall Prevention course, together with the 2-Hour Drug and Alcohol Awareness training, fulfills New York City Department of Buildings requirements for obtaining an SST card. For workers, this combination brings total training hours to 40 hours as required. Please note that this is awareness-level training focused on recognition and understanding rather than advanced technical instruction.

Legal Requirements and Timeline: Local Law 196 mandates that all workers and supervisors at construction sites requiring a designated construction superintendent, site safety coordinator, or site safety manager must receive appropriate safety training. The statute specifies that all workers must accumulate a minimum of 40 hours of training by September 1, 2020, to qualify for an SST card. Supervisors must complete 62 hours of training by June 1, 2019, to obtain a Supervisor SST card.

8-Hour Fall Prevention Training Component:

Falls represent the leading cause of workplace fatalities throughout the construction industry. This 8-hour course provides essential training for construction workers on hazard recognition and practical strategies to prevent fall incidents at job sites. Participants develop the knowledge needed to identify unsafe conditions and implement protective measures.

Learning Objectives for Fall Prevention Training:

  • Learn to identify and classify fall hazards and terminology used in the construction industry
  • Understand OSHA regulations, DOB rules, and other applicable regulatory requirements governing fall prevention practices
  • Recognize employer obligations for maintaining worker safety and providing fall protection systems

2-Hour Drug and Alcohol Awareness Training Component:

Substance use and alcohol impairment present serious safety challenges in construction work environments. This course educates workers about drug and alcohol dependence disorders and their impact on workplace safety and productivity. The training addresses how substance abuse creates hazardous working conditions and explores strategies for addressing these issues in construction settings.

Learning Objectives for Drug and Alcohol Awareness Training:

  • Develop an understanding of how drugs and alcohol negatively affect workplace safety and performance
  • Identify warning signs and symptoms of substance dependency in oneself and coworkers
  • Recognize consequences associated with drug and alcohol use and misuse in occupational settings
  • Understand the broader impacts of chemical dependence on individuals and those around them

Webinar Attendance and Technical Requirements: Following your course registration, you will receive detailed instructions for accessing the live webinar session via the Zoom platform. To participate successfully, you must have access to a personal computer or laptop equipped with a functioning webcam and audio capability. Additionally, you are required to present a valid New York State identification document, such as a driver's license, at the start of the webinar session for verification purposes.
