This course, 'FLN: Learning to Read, ' is the second in our FLN series, which aims to comprehensively cover all the basic skills essential for reading, writing, and numeracy. Learning to read serves as a gateway for children to understand the world around them. It empowers them to make sense of the textual information they encounter and provides the tools to interpret, question, and learn from it. This course aims to equip learners with the knowledge and resources necessary to create multisensory learning experiences for young children through enjoyable activities that foster the foundational competencies required for success. It aligns with the relevant Curricular Goals, Competencies, and Learning Outcomes appropriate for the children's age group, as outlined in the National Curriculum Framework (NCF) for the Foundational Stage (2022).

Syllabus

  • Week 1: Unit 1. Phonological Awareness: Recognise the sound system of language and understand that speech units can be broken down into their components. Identifying rhymes and alliteration, blending and segmenting sound units in words, such as syllables, onset-rime and phonemes.
  • Week 2: Unit 2. Print Awareness: Understand that words convey information and that books have a structure. Recognising the basic format of a book, the concept of words in print, the direction in which they are printed, and the identification of basic punctuation marks.
  • Week 3: Unit 3. Phonics: Recognise that words are composed of letters, connect letter shapes to sounds, and use this knowledge to decode and read simple to multisyllabic words with accuracy and high-frequency words by sight.
  • Week 4: Unit 4. Reading Fluency: Learn to read with accuracy, speed, and expression, enabling children to comprehend and enjoy what they read - progressing from decoding isolated words to reading simple sentences, multiple sentences, and connected texts such as passages and stories.
