Access to safe and nutritious food is a right for all, but not everybody can enjoy this right. Over 35% of the global population could not afford a healthy diet in 2022. The problem is growing even in wealthy countries. There are many challenges facing the sector as it works to meet this demand. Many agencies strive to provide nutritious food and meet client needs, but need support.

This timely course builds on decades of experience of food relief and nutrition to equip staff and volunteers with the knowledge and skills to develop effective nutrition policy.

The course helps you learn about food and nutrition, examine your own diet, and experience what it is like to eat on a low budget. You will be able to speak confidently about hunger and the pathways to food insecurity. You will examine the health impacts of food insecurity, and the challenges faced by the sector.

Global food banking experts will share their insights and experiences about issues such as meeting clients’ needs, the importance of food safety, and the value of food and nutrition policy for the sector.

The course will provide step-by-step instructions about key stages, where to start and how to embed an effective nutrition policy.

Most importantly, the course shares with participants how to prepare everyone for the change and set up systems to ensure that you measure your success.

This course is essential for every staff member, volunteer, manager, and board member who is interested in providing a dignified and nutritious food survey. For maximum impact, consider doing this course as a work group to transform your organisation’s approach to nutrition.

Syllabus

Module 1 – Hunger & Food Relief

Introduction to hunger, food insecurity and its causes and the rates of food insecurity around the world. Global targets to guide action on reducing hunger. The many faces of food insecurity and how to support people seeking food relief. The types of food relief operations and how they work. The importance of effective, efficient and equitable food relief. A challenge to eat for a week on less than $10 per day.

Module 2 – Health Impacts of Food insecurity

Covers the latest advice on the types and amounts of food to eat for good health. Learn how to identify food that is good for you. Take the quiz to rate the healthiness of your own diet. Explore the challenges of trying to eat a healthy diet when you don’t have enough money for food. Examine the impact of food insecurity on health and the importance of diet for clients seeking food relief. Hear from global experts about the important role of the food relief sector in helping their clients access nutritious food.

Module 3 – Challenges Facing the Food Relief Sector

Examines the barriers to providing nutritious food and how the food relief sector is responding. The importance of providing a dignified food relief service. The need to know who your clients are, their needs and wants. How to offer a service that focuses on respect, dignity, choice and sharing appropriate, nourishing food. Common issues with food storage, transport, logistics, safety, and the irregular, ad hoc food supply. Limitations due to a lack of volunteers, funding, and reducing donations.

Module 4 – Nutrition Policy Basics

An introduction to policy and its value for food industry, staff and volunteers, funders and clients. Hear success stories about nutrition policies in action. Explore approaches that give more than food. Examine the realities of changing to a healthier food supply – food industry relations, food safety for perishable food, managing client expectations. Giving nutrition policy the same focus as human resource management or other operations.

Module 5 – Nutrition Policy Toolkit

How to identify the readiness of your organisation for nutrition policy. An introduction to the key stages of developing a successful nutrition policy and identifying where to start. New tools to guide your policy development and testimonials to inspire the journey. Key strategies for when things don’t go to plan.

Module 6 – Making Sure Your Nutrition Policy Works

Consider ways to prepare people for policy change. A simple step by step guide to the change process. How to measure success – tools to monitor nutrition improvements and client satisfaction as well as the amount of food distributed.
