This course features Coursera Coach! A smarter way to learn with interactive, real-time conversations that help you test your knowledge, challenge assumptions, and deepen your understanding as you progress through the course. This advanced course covers key networking services and routing concepts, providing a deeper understanding of how modern networks operate. You will explore routing techniques, dynamic protocols, and the role of multiple routers in complex networks, along with how routers make routing decisions and utilize different routing tables. We will also dive into network address translation (NAT), DHCP, and DNS, explaining how they support network management and domain name resolution. You’ll understand the importance of VPNs for secure communication, learn about IP packet transmission, and the differences between static and dynamic routes. Ideal for IT professionals and network engineers, this course requires foundational networking knowledge. By the end of the course, you will be able to configure dynamic routing, use NAT for efficient IP management, implement DNS for network resolution, and ensure secure communications with VPN technologies.

Syllabus

  • Routing
    • In this module, we will explore the core concepts of routing, focusing on the role of routers in directing network traffic. You will learn about routing tables, static and dynamic routes, and how multiple routers interact in complex networks. We’ll also cover real-world examples of IP packet transmission, including security considerations and routing decisions.
  • Network Address Translation (NAT)
    • In this module, we will introduce Network Address Translation (NAT) and its crucial role in conserving IP addresses and enabling connectivity between private and public networks. You’ll learn about different NAT types and explore how NAT modifies IP addresses. Practical demonstrations will guide you through configuring NAT on a wireless router.
  • Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) and Domain Name System (DNS)
    • In this module, we will dive into DHCP and DNS, two critical components of modern networking. You will understand how DHCP automatically assigns IP addresses to devices and how DNS resolves domain names into IP addresses. We’ll explore the DNS query resolution process and analyze DNS records using tools like nslookup.
  • VPN - Virtual Private Networks
    • In this module, we will explore Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) and how they enable secure communication over the internet. You’ll learn how VPNs work by encrypting data and masking IP addresses for private browsing. We’ll also cover the differences between HTTP and HTTPS protocols and examine VPNs' role in bypassing website restrictions.
