This course features Coursera Coach! A smarter way to learn with interactive, real-time conversations that help you test your knowledge, challenge assumptions, and deepen your understanding as you progress through the course. In this course, you'll dive deep into the essential components of networking, routing, network devices, and securing TCP/IP systems. Starting with routing protocols such as NAT, OSPF, and BGP, you will learn to configure routers, understand static and dynamic routing, and explore concepts like port forwarding and NAT. As you progress, you'll uncover the various network applications and learn to apply network tools like Wireshark and netstat for troubleshooting and managing network traffic effectively. With hands-on activities throughout, you will gain the confidence to apply what you learn in real-world scenarios. As the course continues, you'll also explore security techniques and solutions critical for safeguarding your networks. You'll learn about encryption methods, access control, digital certificates, and tools like RADIUS and TACACS+ that ensure a robust network security infrastructure. Additionally, you'll learn how to configure and manage advanced network devices like switches and firewalls. Concepts such as VLANs, inter-VLAN routing, and load balancing will help you optimize network performance while maintaining security. This course is designed for IT professionals and network administrators who want to improve their skills in routing, network management, and security. The course does not require prior knowledge of networking, though some basic computer skills may be helpful. By the end of the course, you will understand how to manage network devices, configure security protocols, and implement best practices to build and secure complex network infrastructures. By the end of the course, you will be able to configure routers, secure TCP/IP communications, troubleshoot network issues using various tools, implement VLANs, and ensure network security with encryption and access control methods.

Syllabus

  • Routing
    • In this module, we will explore the fundamentals of routing, from static to dynamic routing protocols. You’ll learn how routers manage data traffic between networks, configure NAT for efficient IP address usage, and understand advanced routing protocols like OSPF and BGP. This section will provide you with the critical skills necessary to optimize and troubleshoot network routes.
  • TCP/IP Applications
    • In this module, we will delve into the various protocols and applications that rely on TCP/IP. From examining the differences between TCP and UDP to understanding traffic types and network tools, you will gain hands-on experience in managing and securing network communication. Learn how to use powerful tools for network analysis and troubleshooting in real-time environments.
  • Network Naming
    • In this module, we will introduce you to the Domain Name System (DNS) and its importance in connecting users to websites. You’ll learn how DNS works, how to apply it in a network, and how to troubleshoot DNS-related issues. By the end of this section, you’ll have a strong understanding of DNS management and its role in efficient network communication.
  • Securing TCP/IP
    • In this module, we will focus on securing your TCP/IP networks. You’ll learn about encryption, access control, and security protocols such as RADIUS and TACACS+. From securing network communication to implementing single sign-on and digital certificates, this section will provide you with the knowledge to safeguard your network infrastructure against potential vulnerabilities.
  • Switch Features
    • In this module, we will cover essential features of network switches, including VLANs, trunking, and switch port protection. You’ll learn how to configure and manage advanced switching technologies, as well as implement security and performance features like IDS/IPS and load balancing. This section will equip you with the knowledge to manage enterprise-level switch configurations and network security.
  • IPv6
    • In this module, we will explore IPv6, the next generation of internet protocol. You’ll learn how IPv6 addressing works, how to configure IPv6 on routers, and how to address IPv6 routing and tunneling challenges. By the end of this section, you will be ready to implement IPv6 in modern networks and address the evolving needs of internet communication.
