This course provides a foundational grounding on issues of institutional racism, and how this can manifest in higher education institutions (HEIs). It also provides introductory information on self-advocacy, being an effective ally, combating imposter syndrome, and how to prioritize your wellbeing. It is for anyone who has experienced institutional racism or is committed to building equitable communities in HEIs.

Syllabus

  • Racism and Inequity Within Higher Education
    • This module examines how institutional racism can create barriers and contribute to inequity within higher education. You will explore the impact of institutional racism on the experiences and progression of students and academics, consider how higher education institutions are working to address these challenges, and reflect on the importance of equity, inclusion, and respectful interactions in creating more supportive learning and working environments.
  • Recognizing Institutional Racism in Higher Education
    • This module explores the different ways institutional racism can manifest within higher education institutions and the impact it can have on individuals and communities. You will examine common forms of institutional racism, develop an understanding of the challenges faced by those affected, and explore strategies that can help reduce barriers and promote a more inclusive, equitable higher education environment.
  • Self-Advocacy and Being an Ally
    • This module explores how self-advocacy and allyship can help create more inclusive and equitable higher education environments. You will learn strategies for advocating for yourself and supporting others, develop skills in active listening and constructive allyship, and consider how individual actions can contribute to challenging institutional racism and fostering a stronger sense of belonging across higher education communities.
  • Managing Mental Health and Wellbeing
    • This module explores the personal and professional impact of institutional racism within higher education and the ways it can affect confidence, wellbeing, and academic progression. You will examine concepts such as the deficit model and imposter syndrome, develop strategies for building self-confidence and resilience, and learn how prioritizing self-care can support wellbeing and success in higher education environments.
