This course, 'Understanding Racism and its Manifestation(s)', is designed for congregational members, policy makers, educationalists, and the public who seek a deeper understanding of race and racism. Participants will analyze racial processes within organizational contexts and address the challenges posed by negative stereotypes. The course will inform antiracist policies and practices, particularly in local congregations, and help identify behaviors that perpetuate racism in religious settings. Through life stories of marginalization, case studies, and narratives, learners will reflect on the lived experiences of minority groups and understand how race and racism influence ministry. Syllabus

Racism in Organisational Contexts
- This module will delve into how racial processes occur in organisational contexts and how individuals can become more aware of them. Learners will explore the challenges posed by negative stereotypes and understand how these processes result in the marginalisation of certain groups. The module will also cover how race manifests in organisational, community, and societal contexts to inform antiracist policies and practices. Consider how these insights can be applied in your own organisational or community setting to foster inclusivity.
Understanding Racism in Congregations
- This module will explore how race and racism influence the way ministry is exercised in local congregations. Learners will identify behaviors that perpetuate racism within religious settings, particularly focusing on the Church of England. Through reflection on life stories of marginalization, learners will gain insights into how these narratives can help us tell our own stories. Remember to engage with the material actively and consider how these insights can be applied in your own community.
Lived Experiences and Group Dynamics in Higher Education
- This module focuses on understanding the lived experiences of minority groups using narratives and grassroots methodologies. Learners will develop an understanding of group dynamics and how cultural capital and institutional habitus impact hierarchical structures in organizations, society, and community settings. The module will also provide materials to raise awareness of other people's experiences through case studies and personal narratives. Reflect on how these insights can be used to promote inclusivity and understanding in your own community.
