Most managers are promoted for being good at the work, then discover that the job is no longer the work. It is hiring, setting goals, coaching, delegating, evaluating, budgeting, and holding people together through change, and almost nobody is taught any of it before they are handed a team. This course teaches the job itself: what a manager actually does each week, and how to do each part of it well enough that the team performs without being pushed. Across four thematic modules and eight focused lessons, you will start with the transition into management, covering management styles, the difference between managing and leading, and the two things that move performance most, namely recognition and engagement. You will then master the core duties, from hiring and goal setting through coaching, teams, virtual employees, and performance monitoring. From there you will build the daily toolkit of delegation, communication, performance evaluations, and financial literacy, and finish with the harder ground, covering technology, corporate responsibility and ethics, change and morale, discipline, and termination. Each lesson opens with two five-minute topic videos followed immediately by applied practice, and every module closes with a hands-on lab, a roleplay, a discussion prompt, and a graded assessment, so nothing stays theoretical for long. Whether you were promoted last month or have been managing for years without ever being trained, this course gives you the frameworks, checklists, and worked scenarios that turn management from instinct into practice. By the end, you will be able to hire deliberately, set goals people can act on, delegate without losing control, evaluate fairly, and handle the conversations most managers dread.

Syllabus

  • Introduction to the Entire Course
    • Provides a starting-point assessment that helps learners understand their current readiness across the management skills developed throughout the course. It highlights strengths and development needs across management style and trust building, recognition and engagement, hiring and goal setting, coaching and delegation, performance evaluation and budgeting, and handling change, discipline, and termination. Results generate a personalized readiness profile and recommended learning path without restricting access to any module.
  • Getting Started as a Manager
    • Establishes the foundation for understanding what effective management looks like and how it differs from leadership. Learners examine tough, nice, and effective management styles, build two-way trust, and apply the four functions of energizing, empowering, supporting, and communicating. The module then explores leadership traits, employee motivation, recognition and rewards, and the practices that strengthen engagement through clear direction, two-way communication, involvement, autonomy, flexibility, and support.
  • Mastering Key Management Duties
    • Develops the core management duties that shape team performance. Learners practice hiring deliberately through clear job descriptions, recruiting, interviewing, and candidate evaluation, then set actionable goals using SMART criteria and disciplined prioritization. The module also develops employee coaching and mentoring, career development, team and meeting management, managing virtual and shift-based employees, and performance monitoring through milestones, actions, schedules, and measurable progress.
  • Tools and Techniques for Managing
    • Builds the practical toolkit managers use to organize work, communicate effectively, evaluate performance, and manage financial responsibilities. Learners overcome common barriers to delegation, apply the six delegation steps, and determine what to delegate and what to retain. The module strengthens active listening, written communication, and presentation skills, then develops fair, no-surprises performance evaluation practices and foundational financial literacy covering budgets, accounting basics, balance sheets, and income statements.
  • Technology, Ethics, and Tough Times
    • Prepares learners to handle complex management situations where decisions have significant consequences for people and organizations. Learners evaluate workplace technology, corporate social responsibility, workplace politics, and ethical decision-making before exploring urgency, crises, change, and employee morale. The module then develops a structured approach to discipline and termination through performance-focused conversations, the two disciplinary tracks, the five-part discipline process, improvement plans, layoffs, and humane termination procedures.
  • Course Wrap-Up and Next Steps
    • Provides practical reference, reflection, and application resources that consolidate the management skills developed throughout the course. These resources bring together management styles, the four management functions, recognition and engagement practices, interviewing and SMART goal tools, coaching, delegation, performance evaluation, financial basics, change management, and discipline processes. The collection also includes management tips, a comprehensive manager's toolkit, and a final integrated project in which learners diagnose a real or representative team's performance and engagement gaps, select appropriate management practices, and build a measurable management plan.
