A single unexpected energy release can crush, burn, amputate, or kill. In US manufacturing, lockout/tagout violations remain among OSHA's most frequently cited standards year after year. This course builds the knowledge and procedural confidence every worker needs to control hazardous energy safely, correctly, and in full compliance with OSHA's Control of Hazardous Energy Standard (29 CFR 1910.147). You will learn to identify the types of hazardous energy sources found in industrial equipment, understand the difference between authorized, affected, and other employee roles, and follow a compliant LOTO procedure from shutdown to release, step by step. No prior LOTO training or certification is required. Through real-world video demonstrations and interactive scenario-based activities, you will practice applying energy isolation procedures, selecting the right lockout/tagout devices, and verifying zero-energy conditions before any servicing or maintenance begins, the way it's done on a real manufacturing floor. Enroll today and ensure your team is equipped to work on machinery safely, compliantly, and without risk of preventable fatality.

Syllabus

  • LOTO Fundamentals: Hazardous Energy and the OSHA Standard
    • Before a worker touches a single piece of machinery for servicing or maintenance, it is important to understand what makes that equipment dangerous and what the law requires them to do about it. This module establishes that foundation, exploring what hazardous energy is, where it exists in manufacturing equipment, who is responsible for controlling it, and what OSHA's energy control program requires of both employers and workers. Every concept introduced here directly underpins the procedures and decisions covered in the modules that follow.
  • LOTO Procedures, Devices and Special Situations
    • This module takes you from regulation to execution. Starting with OSHA's required LOTO procedure sequence, you will move through the full process of de-energizing industrial equipment, from notifying affected employees all the way to verifying zero-energy state before work begins. You will build fluency with the hardware that makes isolation possible, and practice matching the right devices to the right energy sources. The module closes with the real-world complexities that every manufacturing worker eventually encounters, including group LOTO across multiple authorized employees, procedure transfers across shift changes, and temporary re-energization for testing, so that compliance holds even when situations are not straightforward.
  • Course Wrap-Up and Final Assessment
    • This module consolidates every critical LOTO behavior covered across both modules into a personal commitment checklist. You will demonstrate your competency through a final graded assessment, confirming that you can apply safe, OSHA-compliant LOTO practices independently and correctly every time you service or maintain equipment.
