Syllabus

The OSH Act & OSHA Framework

This module covers the legal foundation of workplace safety in the U.S., focusing on the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSH Act) and OSHA’s role in creating and enforcing safety standards. It explores the law’s purpose, the General Duty Clause, and the difference between Federal OSHA and State Plan programs. Key topics include workers' rights to a safe workplace, training, and protection from retaliation, as well as employers’ responsibilities to provide a hazard-free workplace, comply with OSHA standards, and meet training and posting requirements. By the end, learners will understand OSHA compliance and shared responsibilities for workplace safety.

OSHA Standards & Regulatory Structure

This module provides an overview of OSHA standards across industries, focusing on Title 29 of the Code of Federal Regulations (29 CFR). Learners explore how standards are categorized for General Industry, Construction, Maritime, and Agriculture, helping them identify applicable regulations for their workplace. Key standards covered include Hazard Communication, PPE, Walking-Working Surfaces, LOTO, and recordkeeping. The module also highlights OSHA compliance resources like interpretations, directives, training materials, and consultation services. By the end, participants will understand how OSHA standards are organized and how to access resources for effective compliance and safety.

Hazard Recognition & Risk Management

This module teaches essential skills for recognizing and managing workplace hazards to prevent injury or illness. Learners explore common hazard categories—physical, chemical, biological, and ergonomic—and distinguish between safety and health hazards. The module covers proactive identification methods like Job Hazard Analysis (JHA), workplace inspections, near-miss reporting, and incident trend evaluation. It also introduces the hierarchy of controls, focusing on elimination, substitution, engineering controls, administrative controls, and PPE. By the end, participants will be able to identify hazards, assess risks, and apply control strategies for safer work environments.

Injury and Illness Prevention, Enforcement & Compliance

This module focuses on applying OSHA requirements in real-world workplace settings, covering injury prevention, enforcement, and compliance. Learners explore key elements of injury and illness prevention programs, such as management leadership, worker participation, hazard correction, and continuous improvement. The module also examines OSHA's inspection and enforcement processes, including priorities, citation classifications, penalties, and abatement requirements. Participants review OSHA recordkeeping obligations, including 300-series forms and reporting for severe injuries and fatalities, emphasizing accurate documentation and timely reporting for compliance. By the end, learners will understand how prevention, enforcement, and recordkeeping support safe, compliant work environments.
