Emotional Intelligence: Practical Communication Skills is a practical, beginner-friendly course designed to help you understand, build, and apply emotional intelligence in work, leadership, relationships, and everyday life. You’ll start by clarifying what emotional intelligence is, why it matters, and how the five components in Goleman’s model (self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skills) exist as concrete, observable behaviours. You’ll also explore how the brain and body respond to emotions and how mindfulness can increase awareness & calm. From there, you’ll develop hands-on skills across each EI component. You’ll learn tools for naming emotions and bodily cues, journaling about triggers and patterns, and using feedback to uncover blind spots. You’ll practice techniques for self-regulating, and building resilience to recover from setbacks. You’ll deepen empathy and social awareness through active listening, and reading social cues, and you’ll apply relationship-management skills to difficult conversations. Finally, you’ll build practical plans to use emotional intelligence at work - in leadership, collaboration, and decision-making. You’ll apply EI to motivate yourself under pressure, lead with empathy, create psychologically safe teams, and influence others even without formal authority. Throughout the course, you’ll build a personal development plan, design sustainable habits for maintaining emotional intelligence, and identify priorities for continued growth long after the course ends.

Syllabus

  • Foundations of Emotional Intelligence
    • This module introduces the foundations of emotional intelligence and shows why it matters in everyday life, work, leadership, and relationships. You will explore what emotional intelligence is, how to use the course effectively, why emotional intelligence supports better decisions and healthier interactions, and how Daniel Goleman’s five-component model provides a practical roadmap for growth. The module also connects mindfulness and the science of emotions to real-life emotional responses, helping you notice, interpret, and respond to emotions with greater intention.
  • Developing Self Awareness
    • This module helps you build the self-awareness that underpins every other emotional intelligence skill. Through reflective practices such as journaling, noticing emotional patterns, understanding an emotional baseline, and using feedback as an external mirror, you will begin to identify what you feel, why you feel it, and how those patterns shape your choices and interactions. By turning attention inward in practical and nonjudgmental ways, you can develop a clearer picture of your triggers, habits, strengths, and blind spots.
  • Self Regulation in Action
    • This module focuses on how to manage emotions without suppressing them, especially in stressful, triggering, or high-pressure situations. You will examine the difference between reacting and responding, practice techniques such as pausing, breathwork, grounding, and reframing, and explore how to stay calm under pressure while breaking unhelpful emotional habits. These practical tools can be used in meetings, difficult conversations, and frustrating moments to help you become more composed, resilient, and intentional.
  • Motivation and Inner Drive
    • This module explores how emotional intelligence fuels motivation, persistence, and resilience from the inside out. You will examine emotional energy, the role of a deeper personal why, and how emotional goals can help sustain focus even in uncertain times. The module also addresses setbacks, reframing, resilience, and daily habits that support recovery and steady progress, giving you practical tools for maintaining momentum without relying only on willpower or external pressure.
  • Empathy and Social Awareness
    • This module helps you strengthen your ability to understand others more accurately and respond with greater sensitivity and clarity. You will explore empathy, reading the room, listening to understand rather than reply, recognizing emotional needs, and avoiding misunderstandings caused by missed cues or assumptions. These skills are essential in relationships, teamwork, leadership, and customer-facing situations because they improve trust, reduce conflict, and help people feel heard.
  • Relationship Management
    • This module shows how emotional intelligence becomes visible in relationships through communication, feedback, trust, and conflict management. You will examine how to notice emotional cues in others, communicate clearly and kindly, collaborate more effectively, and navigate difficult conversations with composure and empathy. The module also highlights emotionally intelligent feedback and emotional openness as practical ways to build trust and strengthen both personal and professional relationships.
  • Leadership – Emotional Intelligence applied
    • This module applies emotional intelligence to leadership, influence, and collaborative work. You will examine how empathy, emotional self-management, and social awareness support trust, team performance, and healthier group dynamics. The module covers emotionally intelligent leadership behaviors, collaboration and teamwork, building emotionally safe teams, reading group emotional currents, and influencing others without formal authority. Whether you manage people directly or contribute within a team, these skills can help you lead with greater composure, credibility, and human understanding.
  • Advanced EI Strategies
    • This module extends emotional intelligence into more advanced and strategic applications. You will explore how emotions influence decisions, how to balance logic with emotional information, and how to use emotional data as a practical source of insight rather than something to ignore. The module also applies emotional intelligence to customer and client interactions, then concludes with personal development planning and long-term maintenance strategies so you can sustain progress beyond the course.
