Characters become more meaningful when they feel like they belong to something larger. In this course, you’ll design characters as part of the world you’ve already built, grounded in its rules, shaped by its environment, and connected to its logic. Instead of focusing only on appearance, you’ll learn how to translate narrative, personality, and context into visual form. As you develop your concept art, you’ll build a character system that supports consistency across multiple images, expressions, and situations. You’ll also begin placing your characters into the world itself, creating scenes that feel intentional and connected. By the end of the course, you’ll have a complete Character System Pack and a set of character-in-world compositions, ready to support further development and expansion.

Syllabus

Character Foundations & Persona Design
- Characters start with who they are, not just how they look. In this module, you’ll define your character from the inside out, starting with their role, personality, and relationship to your world. You’ll explore how narrative function shapes design decisions and how visual traits emerge from deeper ideas like behavior, motivation, and environment. This is where your character begins to take shape as part of a larger system.
Character Expressions & Consistency
- As your character develops, consistency becomes essential. In this module, you’ll expand your character across expressions, poses, and variations while maintaining a recognizable identity. You’ll explore how costume, materials, and emotion reflect both personality and world context. This is where your character becomes a system that can adapt without losing coherence.
Documenting & Delivering Your Character
- Your character is now a system—now it needs to be refined and documented. In this module, you’ll prepare your character for real use by refining your concept art, defining rules, and organizing everything into a structured format. You’ll ensure your visuals are clear, consistent, and ready to be shared or built on. This is where your character becomes something that can move beyond exploration and into application.
Characters in the World
- A character becomes fully realized when they exist within their world. In this module, you’ll bring your character and environment together, creating scenes that show how they interact and are experienced visually. You’ll explore composition, scale, lighting, and spatial relationships, along with shot size and camera angle. This is where your character system becomes applied concept art.
