This course features Coursera Coach! A smarter way to learn with interactive, real-time conversations that help you test your knowledge, challenge assumptions, and deepen your understanding as you progress through the course. Bring your game characters to life from scratch with this immersive and hands-on course that guides you through professional-level 3D character creation in Blender and seamless integration into Unity and Unreal Engine. You'll learn how to model, texture, rig, animate, and export stylized characters ready for gameplay and publishing. The course begins with detailed modeling in Blender—covering everything from facial features and body parts to hair and stylized clothing. You’ll then dive into unwrapping and texturing workflows, giving your character depth, realism, and personality through hand-painted textures and advanced shader techniques. In the next phase, you’ll rig and animate your character, creating walk, run, jump, and idle cycles before exporting everything into game engines. You'll learn how to integrate assets into both Unreal Engine and Unity, set up controllers, implement cameras, and polish character movement mechanics. This course is ideal for aspiring game developers, 3D artists, and hobbyists who want to master character design workflows from start to finish. Prior experience with Blender is recommended, but not required. The difficulty level is intermediate, balancing creative and technical skills with real-world application. By the end of the course, you will be able to model, texture, rig, animate, and export a complete game-ready character, and integrate it into Unity or Unreal Engine with full gameplay functionality.

Syllabus

  • Modeling 3D Character in Blender
    • In this module, we will start by aligning reference images and then build a stylized 3D character from the ground up. You’ll model facial features like the eyes, nose, lips, and ears, followed by the head, upper body, hands, and legs. We’ll also design stylized hair to bring your character’s personality to life.
  • Design Character Clothing
    • In this module, we will model the full outfit for your 3D character, including a stylized t-shirt, pants, and shoes. You’ll then refine the clothing using Blender’s cloth brush to create natural folds and realistic fabric behavior that enhances your character’s look.
  • Unwrapping and Texturing Character
    • In this module, we will prepare your character for the texturing phase by optimizing and unwrapping the model. You'll paint stylized skin, hair, and outfit textures, and explore how to convert your character into a cartoon-style look with a unique 2D aesthetic in 3D space.
  • Bring Your Character to Life: Learn Rigging and Animation
    • In this module, we will rig your character and animate essential movement cycles such as walking, running, jumping, and idle poses. You’ll also learn how to export the rigged and animated character to game engines like Unity and Unreal for further integration.
  • Build Your Game Environment
    • In this module, we will build a fully playable environment for your character. Starting with terrain modeling, you’ll create elements like paths, bridges, vegetation, and rocks. You'll also learn how to texture the environment and export it for use in Unity or Unreal Engine.
  • Unreal Engine: Build Your Character Game and Publish It
    • In this module, we will bring your Blender creations into Unreal Engine 5. You’ll learn how to set up the environment, import your character, build game logic, add animations, and implement camera and movement controls. Finally, you’ll package your project for Windows release.
  • Unity Engine: Build Your Character Game in Unity
    • In this module, we will recreate your character game in Unity. You’ll import assets, set up movement scripts and animations, and implement joystick controls. This section wraps up with exporting your game as an APK file for Android, making it ready for mobile users.
  • Reaching the End of Our Character Game Project
    • In this module, we will conclude the course by summarizing everything you’ve accomplished—from modeling and texturing to rigging and publishing a game. You’ll also receive insights into advancing your skills and exploring new creative directions in 3D character and game design.
