Discover the intricate soils and temperate climate of the Santa Barbara wine region, often referred to as America's Riviera, which gained widespread recognition through the acclaimed 2004 film Sideways.
This final session in the certification program delivers a comprehensive and engaging overview of this remarkable winemaking region, which is responsible for producing some of the most highly sought-after wines on the planet. The area benefits from its close proximity to the Pacific Ocean, a wide range of varied mesoclimates, and an extended growing season, all of which combine to create ideal conditions for world-class viticulture. You will conclude your studies by developing the ability to understand and clearly articulate the significance of the Humboldt Current, the Coriolis Effect, and the Transverse Range in shaping this region's terroir. Santa Barbara County offers far more depth and diversity than what was portrayed in Sideways! Expanding beyond Santa Barbara itself, you will also explore the southern origins of California's wine heritage and the numerous small AVAs and dedicated producers that make up the South Coast.
