The Interplay Between Safety and Security in Aviation Systems

Going in, I thought it would be one of those courses that treat safety and security like distant cousins. Related, yes, but never really talking to each other. This one didn’t do that. It kept forcing the conversation. Sometimes uncomfortably. In a useful way.
What stood out for me was how clearly it showed that safety and security don’t always move in the same direction. A measure that improves security can quietly introduce safety risks if you’re not careful. And the reverse too. The course didn’t oversimplify that tension. It leaned into it, using real aviation contexts that felt familiar, especially if you’ve worked around airports or airline operations.
The structure was calm and logical. No unnecessary drama, no trying too hard to sound clever. Concepts were introduced, then tested against realistic scenarios. I found myself pausing a few times, just thinking, ah, so this is why some decisions feel right on paper but wrong on the field.
It’s not a flashy course, and that’s probably a compliment. It respects the learner. If you already have some background in aviation, risk management, or policy, you’ll appreciate how it connects theory to operational reality. If you don’t, you’ll still follow along, but you may need to slow down and reflect a bit. Which is fine. Aviation isn’t meant to be rushed.
