Conflict is everywhere and it is impossible to avoid conflicting viewpoints. However, not all conflict is bad, nor is it inherently negative. How conflict is handled makes all the difference. It is through proper identification and understanding of conflict that allows for effective resolutions, some of which may yield positive outcomes. In this course, we will examine the different types of conflict, how to understand and embrace the positive aspects of conflict, and how to successfully navigate conflict to positive resolution.
This course presents the material though video lessons, case studies, and interviews. In each module students will be presented with in-video quiz questions to test their understanding. To further their mastery of the content students will also be asked to complete two peer reviewed assignments.
Upon completing this course, you will be able to:
1. Identify the different types of conflict
2. Illustrate the positive aspects of conflict
3. Provide examples of positive ways to deal with conflict

- Foundations: Course Introduction and Types of Conflict
- In this module, you will begin with an overview of the course structure, learning resources, and key contributors. You will then explore the different types, sources, and levels of conflict that commonly occur in workplace settings. Through lessons, case studies, and expert insights, you will learn how to recognize conflict and better understand how it develops in professional environments.
- Positive Aspects of Conflict
- In this module, you will explore how conflict can lead to positive outcomes when managed effectively. You will examine the benefits of constructive conflict, including how diverse perspectives, open communication, and active listening can strengthen collaboration and improve team performance. You will also identify common causes of conflict in workplace environments and learn how understanding these causes can help prevent escalation and support productive resolution.
- Positive Ways of Dealing with Conflict
- In this module, you will explore practical strategies for addressing conflict in a constructive and professional manner. You will learn how to remain calm, listen actively, focus on facts and shared goals, and choose the right timing for difficult conversations. The module also examines the organizational costs of unresolved conflict—including decreased productivity, disengagement, and turnover—and highlights how effective conflict management can improve employee engagement and workplace performance.
- Course Wrap-up
- In this final module, you will reflect on the key concepts covered throughout the course and reinforce your understanding of constructive conflict management. You will revisit how recognizing different types of conflict, understanding their causes, and applying positive strategies can lead to more productive outcomes.
