This micro-credential, “Geospatial Data Handling & GIS Fundamentals,” serves as the foundational component of the course Geospatial Analysis Laboratory (MGGL-003) and is designed to build essential practical competencies in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and geospatial data management. Spread over 4 weeks through 11 (tentative) guided video sessions (approx. 30 minutes each), this module introduces learners to the fundamental concepts, tools, and workflows required for handling geospatial data in a laboratory environment. Beginning with an understanding of spatial data types, GIS concepts, and Spatial Data Infrastructure (Exercises 1i–1ii), learners progress to gaining hands-on familiarity with GIS software, map projections, coordinate systems, and spatial measurements (Exercises 2i–2ii). The module then focuses on essential data preparation techniques including georeferencing of raster and vector data (Exercise 3i–3ii), followed by practical skills in data acquisition, raster-vector models, digitisation, and editing (Exercises 4i–4iii). Advanced foundational topics such as topology creation, geodatabase development, and emerging geospatial data sources like crowdsourcing and big data (Exercises 5i–5ii) are subsequently introduced. Finally, learners integrate Remote Sensing, Global Positioning System, and field-collected datasets into a unified GIS environment (Exercise 6), completing a full introductory workflow. By the end of these four weeks, learners will have developed the practical skills required to independently create, edit, manage, and integrate geospatial datasets—forming a strong foundation for advanced spatial analysis and professional roles such as Field Surveyor, GPS/GNSS Technician, GIS Data Entry, Junior GIS Technician at this level.
