This course introduces foundational concepts in geospatial data organization, processing, and management using free and open-source tools. Learners will explore spatial reference systems and projections, common geospatial data formats, GIS-based manipulation and visualization, and programming workflows for reading, transforming, and analyzing spatial data. The course concludes with an introduction to database and cloud-based approaches for storing, querying, and managing large or complex geospatial datasets.

Syllabus

  • Projections and Coordinates
    • This module introduces spatial reference systems, coordinates, and projections - the mathmatical and engineering systems for how we refer to locations on the Earth in an unambiguous and portable way.
  • Spatial Data Formats
    • This module introduces common ways spatial data are stored and accessed in files and how they can be manipulated and visualized with GIS software. The module will provide some examples using US Census data.
  • GIS Programming
    • This module extends the two prior modules to introduce concepts for programming with geospatial data formats and leveraging coordinate systems and projections. It is organized into three submodules: data I/O, which introduces methods of reading and writing spatial data to files, R & Grass, which introduces two programming environments useful for working with spatial data, lastly a programming exercise oriented around a research question.
  • Data Storage and Organization
    • This final module goes beyond individual file formats and considers how to utilize database systems and cloud systems to store more complex or large spatial data.
