SELF DISCIPLINE IS A TOPIC EXAMINED BY THE GREATEST THINKERS IN HISTORY Great emperors of Rome, philosophers of ancient Greece, great military thinkers, and modern scientists have all wrestled with the question of how we can all improve our lives and the lives of people around us by becoming more disciplined and gaining more willpower. Over many centuries, they have collectively come up with a number of ideas which I boil down for you in this course, so you don't have to read thousands of pages of textbooks. USE MINDFULNESS TO GAIN WILLPOWER AND SELF DISCIPLINE When you are more mindful about what you are currently doing, you will make better moment-to-moment decisions, and not give into compulsive behaviors. You can always takes few extra moments and rethink the decision you are about to act on, and reconsider whether your behaviors will aid or damage your overall effort. The act of being mindful and imagining two possible outcomes is often enough to gain the willpower and self discipline you need to do the right thing. DON'T LET SHORT-TERM, COMPULSIVE DECISIONS DERAIL YOUR EFFORTS Compulsive behaviors and rash decisions tend to be quite damaging. They can range from food choices to exercise choices to business decisions to even choices of whether to get angry or not, and how to best handle potentially threatening situations. MANAGE STRESS IN ORDER TO GAIN MORE WILLPOWER AND DISCIPLINE Short-term stress isn't considered bad. It can even be helpful to give us energy and focus to take on immediate challenges. But when stress reaches the point of overwhelm, we tend to fall into coping mechanisms that tend to be undesired behaviors that we aren't as mindful about. In fact, mindfulness itself becomes harder to do because our minds are so consumed with that feeling of overwhelm. TIME MANAGEMENT AND TASK ELIMINATION TO DECREASE OVERWHELM When we decrease the intensity of our immediate stressors, they aren't as likely to cause the feeling of being overwhelmed, and that can make it easier to be more mindful about our discipline, and immediately give us more willpower. BALANCE WHEN TO USE WILLPOWER AND SELF DISCIPLINE Don't confuse discipline with willpower. Willpower is the process of forcing yourself to do something in the moment. Self discipline refers to your overall handling of a situation from your mindset to your planning to your execution of certain tasks. For greatest success, combine when you use willpower and when you use self discipline. Sometimes forcing yourself is possible, but often it's not. When forcing yourself to do something out of sheer will isn't possible, you'll be able to employ many tactics to work smarter and not work harder by being intelligent and sophisticated about your self discipline. DON'T MAKE DECISIONS WHEN TIRED The problem with making decisions when tired is similar to the problem of making decisions while feeling overwhelmed. It's just harder to think everything through. It's also harder to find the willpower for self discipline when tired. If you are tired, it's often smarter to just rest instead of forcing yourself to do some next task because you will gain diminishing returns if you are working while being tired. THE MARSHMELLOW TEST FOR DISCIPLINE AND WILLPOWER We'll also discuss the famous Marshmellow test, which tests the discipline and willpower in children. The ladder definition of mindfulness is more widely applicable, and that's the one we will use in this course since everyone can and should be aware of their own moods, thoughts, and feelings. ARE YOUR THOUGHTS THE MAIN CAUSE OF HAPPINESS OR LACK OF HAPPINESS? We are with out thoughts every second of every hour. They set off chain reactions in not only our psychology, but also physiology. If we allow our thoughts to randomly dwell on negative things or if we allow biases to creep in, that might send us down the path of feeling unfulfilled, frustrated, or unhappy. But if we catch our thought patterns and actively work to reverse them, we can take the same reality, but frame it in a way that still makes sense to us, but at the same time works to our benefit and makes us feel better about ourselves - that can be truly transformative, and change feelings of frustration or unhappiness to happiness and fulfillment. MINDFULNESS STRATEGIES AFTER WE CATCH UNDESIRED THOUGHT PATTERNS We have three options after we 1) We can practice "radical acceptance" which is to make peace even with the harshest and most undesired realities. It's not something you'd choose from the outset, but it does help to deal with an already bad situation. 2) We can take ourselves out of situations that lead to the negative thoughts 3) We can reframe how we interpret various situations. For example, instead of thinking that you don't like your job and that you are frustrated to have to go there every day, you can think about it this way: you are lucky that you get to have a job. None of these work perfectly, but together, they can make a significant different in helping you find happiness and fulfillment in many different situations. PATH TO HAPPINESS When you practice mindfulness, you build a relationship with your inner life and your thoughts. You will gain a better understanding of what makes you happy. Once the vision of your happiness crystalizes, the path to getting there will become more clear.
