Overview

TEACHING by DESIGN for ALL EDUCATORS!

Course level: Beginner to Intermediate.

Course Content:

#Teaching loop: This module exposes participants to the concept of meta-cognition and meta-teaching, that later provide a basis for the concept of teaching loop. The teaching loop provides a framework for the teaching by design concept. At the end of this module, participants are able to profile and map their teaching ability based on the teaching loop.

#Goals & Planning: This module exposes participants to the concept of constructive alignment between learning outcomes, teaching & learning activities, and assessment. Subsequently, SMART learning outcomes, strategies to promote learning retention, and factors to enhance learning experiences are discussed. At the end, participants are getting clearer and more concrete concept and applications of constructive alignment for setting the teaching goals and planning learning activities.

#Instructional Strategies: This module exposes participants to the strategies to manage cognitive load of learners that is important to facilitate working memory to process information into long-term memory. Subsequently, participants are exposed to three types of knowledge of teaching - declarative, procedural and conditional. Following that, active learning concept and its techniques are discussed. At the end, participants are getting clearer applications of instructional strategies to engage learners, thus promote effective learning.

#Monitoring: This module exposes participants to the strategies to monitoring their own teaching and student learning activities during a class. Methods for monitoring during a class such as self-assessment, microteaching, assessment for learning and assessment of learning are discussed. At the end, participants are expected to practice those methods to engage learners during teaching, hence promote better teaching and learning experience.

#Evaluation: This module exposes participants to 12 sources of evidence to measure teaching effectiveness. Subsequently, participants are exposed to the concept and application of reflective learning in teaching context. Based on the evidence and reflective learning, participants are expected to develop ability to redesign their teaching practice and later able to share the good teaching practices with other teachers. At the end, participants are expected to continuously improve their teaching effectiveness.

#Teaching Innovation: This module is an extension of the previous modules that exposes participants to the concept of teaching innovation, and a systematic and cyclical approach to produce an action plan to innovate in teaching practice. Subsequently, six criteria of teaching innovation are discussed and finally several tips to create and sustain motivation to teaching innovation are shared. At the end, participants are expected to continuously innovate their teaching practices.

Highlights are provided at each topic of the module. "Highlights are a short collection of bullet points that convey the salient information and provide participants with a quick textual overview of the topic. These three to five bullet points describe the essence of the topic.

Syllabus

  • Discuss different teaching strategies based on the teaching loop
  • Practice different teaching strategies at different teaching phases
  • Reflect on their current teaching strategies in relation to the teaching loop
