Syllabus
- Welcome to the Mind of an Architect
- In this course, we're not just going to tell you what the architect does — we're going to show you. You're going to actually do — on a small scale — the work that an architect does. The work of an architect is to have a certain vision about how things might be better, and we're going to give you an introduction to that mindset and to that way of working. The study of architecture engages a vast range of skills: You learn how to work in teams, you learn how to communicate, you learn how to think critically and analytically, and you learn to exercise your creativity. In this first module, we'll start by dispelling some of the myths about what it means to be an architect. We're also going to talk about what an architect does and does not do. You'll also work on short exercises to stretch your creative muscles and get you going in the design process.
- Architecture in Context: The Natural Environment and the Cultural Environment
- In this module, we'll discuss the work of architecture in a wider context. We'll explore the architect's relationship with the natural environment as well as the cultural environment. By the end of the module, you'll be able to think about the broader natural and social context in which a project exists and how that context can influence design. We'll also introduce the assignment structure of the course!
- Creating Spaces
- In this module, we'll delve deeper into the technical side of architecture. We'll explore essential principles such as composition, hierarchy, balance, and space to ensure that a structure connects with people living near it and interacting with it on a daily basis. We'll also explore how architects use the natural and physical environment to stimulate their creative process by taking a look at incredible examples from renowned architects.
- The Design Process
- In this module, we'll focus on developing the story behind your design. All great architects have great stories, and we'll give you some insight into some of those in this module. You'll also explore how you can develop your own story, which will enable you to build the necessary emotional connection to your design. You'll also learn how to use photography and relevant social media tools to make your design look as attractive as possible to a wider audience.
