"The Fundamentals of Diversity" is the first course in IE University's specialization titled "The Journey to Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging." This course will provide learners with the basic tools to navigate diversity and diverse organizations. Throughout the course, learners will analyze how to promote diversity across demographic categories such as gender, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, race, ethnicity, culture, disability, and age. The course will support learners in identifying the challenges that may arise when striving to create diverse and inclusive workplaces, and ultimately empower learners to create solutions and policies to overcome those challenges. This course is designed for all: students and young professionals as well as older and senior professionals looking for a better understanding of diversity, inclusion, and the critical role these factors play in an organization.

Syllabus

  • Introduction to Diversity: Who's With Me On This Journey?
    • In this module, we'll examine different types of diversity — demographic, experiential, and cognitive — and why they are essential in any organization. We'll also explore the roles that gender, culture, and disability play within diversity and how to manage these aspects of identity within organizations. Moreover, we'll analyze some vulnerabilities within certain categories of diversity.
  • Understanding Gender
    • In this module, we will discuss the concept of gender and gender roles in depth. We will also analyze key terms such as gender identity, gender expression, and sexual orientation and identify the main challenges LGBTI+ communities face in today's world.
  • Intercultural Communication
    • In module 3, we'll explore how culture can impact our companies and the world around us. We will also discuss the origins of intercultural communication as well as the description of race, ethnicity, and racism.
  • Age and Disability as Part of the Fundamentals of Diversity
    • In the last module of the course, we will discuss age in the context of diversity. We'll also focus on an exploration of how people with physical, intellectual, or sensory disabilities can have equal participation in society.
