By completing this course, you will gain essential knowledge and practical skills needed to succeed with WLAN technology in today’s connected world. You’ll explore critical aspects of RF technologies—both Wi-Fi and non-Wi-Fi—including RF frequencies, antenna types, and best practices for overcoming real-world installation challenges. Whether connecting a single device or supporting thousands across a large campus, you’ll learn how to configure, design, and operate secure, efficient wireless networks. What makes this course unique is its comprehensive approach: you’ll not only cover foundational principles like RF mathematics and antenna characteristics but also dive into advanced topics such as spread spectrum technologies, Wi-Fi 6E, and wireless governance. You’ll understand the core issues of wireless operation, including how Wi-Fi overcomes interference and ensures reliable connectivity for users—wherever they are. By the end of the course, you’ll be well-prepared to create, maintain, and troubleshoot WLANs of any size, laying a strong foundation for your future in wireless networking.

Syllabus

  • RF and WLAN Theory
    • The mobile user requires the same accessibility currently enjoyed by wired users. Whether at work, at home, on the road, locally, or internationally, there is a need to connect. Beginning with a single access point (AP) replacing a cable on the floor, Wi-Fi networks have become a true extension of the local-area network (LAN). Sometimes these LANs spread over entire warehouses or campuses, providing simultaneous network connectivity to thousands of laptops, tablets, and smartphones. Many issues can arise in a wireless network due to coverage and the inability to connect to the wireless LAN (WLAN). Understanding how wireless technology works in various WLAN environments will help you to configure, design, and operate wireless networks.
  • WLAN Math and Antennas
    • Welcome to the start of a new journey, where you will develop an understanding of what it takes to create and maintain an effective and secure WLAN in today's environment. As the size of wireless networks increases, so does the complexity of the network design that relates to their deployment. Therefore, understanding Wi-Fi principles is essential in efficiently installing and troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks. To create and maintain an effective and secure WLAN, you must understand the various wireless components and topologies you will encounter. Foundational–level knowledge including RF principles and mathematics, including antenna characteristics will be covered in this course.
  • Wi-Fi Operations
    • One of the most important aspects of wireless operation is how Wi-Fi operates over the air. One of the main problems for the creators of Wi-Fi protocols, was eliminating the interference that other devices cause, and mitigating the impact of this interference on the signal. To meet this need, spread spectrum transmission technology was used. This course examines the basics of spread spectrum technologies, Wi-Fi 6E, media access, and wireless governance.
