This course introduces students to the laws and rules that govern data privacy and security in the US healthcare, finance, and education sectors. The first module will review healthcare laws and rules including HIPAA, the HIPAA Privacy Rule, and the HIPAA Security Rule. In the second module, we will discuss healthcare-related privacy laws and rules, including HITECH and the Breach Notification Rule, GINA's privacy protection requirements and more. We will review the FCRA's consumer privacy protection requirements, FACTA's consumer privacy protection requirements and GLBA's consumer financial privacy protection requirements and more. We will also discuss concepts and topics germane to the FCRA, such as credit reports, credit reporting agencies, consumer rights and more. In the last module, students will be introduced to US education privacy-related laws, children’s online privacy protection laws and associated rules. We will cover FERPA's educational privacy requirements, PPRA's amendments to FERPA, the NCLBA's amendment of PPRA and much more.

Syllabus

US healthcare privacy-related laws and privacy compliance guidance

In this module, we will cover important US privacy laws that cover the healthcare sector, including HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act), HITECH (Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health), and GINA (Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act).

US finance privacy-related laws and associated rules

In our second module, we will tackle US finance privacy-related laws and associated rules, includinng FCRA's (Fair Credit Reporting Act) consumer privacy protection requirements, FACTA's (Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act ) consumer privacy protection requirements, GLBA's (Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act) consumer financial privacy protection requirements, and more. Students will review concepts and topics germane to the FCRA like credit reports, credit reporting agencies, consumer rights, and more.

Introduction to US educational privacy-related laws, children's online privacy protection laws and associated rules

In our final module in this course, we will dive into US education privacy-related laws, children’s online privacy protection laws, and associated rules. This will include FERPA's (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act) educational privacy requirements, PPRA's (Protection of Pupil Rights Amendment) amendments to FERPA, the NCLBA's (No Child Left Behind Act) amendment of PPRA, the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), and much more.
