In this course, students will take a look at US state data privacy and security laws, and we'll wrap up the course and the privacy specialization with an exploration of US state data breach notification laws. We will cover the CCPA and the proposed CPRA, Vermont's Data Broker Regulation, the Illinois Biometric Information Privacy Act and more. Students will learn about CCPA and CPRA business requirements and learn the definition of "brokered personal information." In addition, we'll review California's data breach notification law, which was the first of its kind in the US, and other laws in Texas, New York, Massachusetts, Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia. Students will also review individual definitions of breaches, notification requirements, safe harbor requirements and more.

Syllabus

  • Introduction to US state data privacy and data security laws and the California Consumer Privacy Act of 2018 (CCPA), as amended by the California Privacy Rights Act (CPRA) of 2020
    • This module provides an introduction to state data privacy and data security laws and a detailed look at the California Consumer Privacy Act of 2018 (CCPA), as amended by the California Privacy Rights Act (CPRA) of 2020.
  • Additional state data privacy and data security laws
    • In this module, we will discuss other important state data privacy and data security laws, including those in Vermont, Illinois, Maine, Virgina, and Colorado.
  • US state data breach notification laws
    • In this final module of the course and the specialization, Chris will discuss several US state data breach notification laws. This will include California's data breach notification law, which was the first of its kind in the US. In addition, we'll explore other laws in Texas, New York, Massachusetts, Puerto Rico, and the District of Columbia. Students will also review individual definitions of breaches, notification requirements, safe harbor requirements and more.
