This course provides a hands-on, project-based journey into creating professional game interfaces and flow systems using Unreal Engine. Learners will begin by designing HUD elements, player stats, and scoring systems, then move into configuring interactive menus, start animations, and camera transitions. Building on this, students will implement level complete flows, game over states, and responsive button interactions that ensure smooth player navigation. The course concludes with final gameplay refinements, where learners optimize character movement, fix menu animations, and integrate pause menus with quit and resume functionality. By mastering these skills, students will be able to design, implement, and refine game states, menus, and HUD systems that elevate player experience and game polish. This course is ideal for aspiring Unreal Engine developers who want to analyze, configure, and integrate interactive UI systems while applying Bloom’s Taxonomy-driven learning outcomes such as designing, implementing, refining, and optimizing.

Syllabus

  • HUD, Score, and Lives System
    • In this module, learners explore the complete setup and implementation of a HUD (Heads-Up Display) for tracking player score and lives in a Pac-Man style game using Unreal Engine. The lessons guide learners step-by-step through binding variables, updating player stats, handling score events, adding animations, and rewarding extra lives. By the end of the module, learners will be able to design and manage a fully functional HUD system that reacts dynamically to player actions and game events, ensuring a polished and engaging gameplay experience.
  • Menu System and Intro Setup
    • In this module, learners will focus on designing and implementing the game’s intro flow and menu system in Unreal Engine. The lessons cover creating start animations, camera sequences, material and enemy tweaks, particle effects, and a functional main menu interface. Learners will gain hands-on experience in structuring user navigation, improving visual presentation, and ensuring that the menu system enhances player engagement from the moment the game begins.
  • Main Menu Logic and Level Complete Flow
    • This module focuses on building and refining the main menu system and level completion flow in Unreal Engine. Learners will design interactive menu screens, implement button functionality, and connect UI elements with gameplay logic. They will also create a Level Complete screen and Game Over flow, ensuring smooth transitions between gameplay, menus, and progression states. By the end of this module, learners will gain hands-on experience in designing UI animations, configuring player controller inputs, and implementing menu-based navigation to enhance overall game user experience.
  • Final Game States and Pause Menu
    • This module focuses on refining final game states, implementing pause functionality, and polishing menu systems in Unreal Engine. Learners will explore the process of fine-tuning character movement, improving main menu button animations, and building a Game Over menu that enhances user interaction. They will also configure game instances, test with breakpoints, and implement a fully functional pause menu with quit and resume options. By the end of this module, learners will gain the ability to deliver a professional game flow that integrates user-friendly menus and seamless gameplay management.
