You will learn to set up, organize, and manage a professional Adobe Premiere project as an assistant editor. By the end of this course, you'll configure Premiere as a production-ready editing environment, protect camera-original footage through industry-standard practices, and develop systems that keep footage organized and easy to navigate. You'll also practice maintaining clean, versioned sequences and communicating project status through markers and handoff notes. This course is designed for aspiring and working assistant editors, including experienced Assistant Editors bringing their workflow knowledge into Premiere from another system. You'll explore how post-production teams collaborate, where Premiere's terminology and tools differ from other non-linear editing software, and what it takes to hit the ground running on a Premiere-based production. Through hands-on exercises, you'll build the Adobe Premiere project used throughout the course: configuring sequence settings, scratch disks, auto-save, a custom workspace layout, and a keyboard shortcut set suited to assistant editor tasks.

Syllabus

How Editorial Systems Enable Storytelling
- Great edits rarely begin with the timeline. Before an editor can shape performances, pacing, and emotion, the project itself must be organized, reliable, and easy to navigate. Editorial systems create the structure that makes creative storytelling possible. This module builds an understanding of the role through the habits, responsibilities, and professional values that define a reliable assistant editor. It also connects those practices directly to Premiere’s environment and terminology, showing how professional editorial workflows are implemented within the software. You'll learn to navigate the interface from an assistant editor's perspective and configure the software as a professional editing environment ready for production work.
Media Integrity, Ingest, and Organization
- Next, you’ll learn how assistant editors protect and organize production media in Premiere. You’ll practice verifying footage, building bin structures, logging metadata, and preparing subclips and selects that allow editors to work efficiently.
Project Hygiene, Versioning, and Clean Handoffs
- Finally, you’ll develop the habits that keep editing projects reliable during production. You’ll practice sequence versioning, project cleanup, and exporting screeners while communicating project status clearly to collaborators.
