You will learn the day-to-day workflows assistant editors use to keep an active production moving. By the end of this course, you'll ingest and organize daily footage using professional dailies workflows, and build string-outs and selects sequences that anticipate the editor's first move. You'll also create and manage proxy workflows, and batch exports in Adobe Media Encoder, and troubleshoot common technical issues like broken links, frame-rate mismatches, and sync problems. This course picks up where project setup ends and daily production begins, simulating the pace and pressure of a real editorial workflow. You'll configure standardized audio track layouts, perform technical dialogue cleanup, place temporary music and sound elements, and maintain version control and changelogs that track editorial revisions. Through a continuous hands-on project, you'll practice the professional habits that make assistant editors dependable collaborators: anticipating what the editor needs, flagging problems early, and communicating clearly through handoff notes as footage arrives and the cut evolves.

Syllabus

Dailies: Ingesting, Verifying, and Preparing Footage for the Editor
- Production is running. Footage arrived this morning, the editor has a call time, and it's your job to make sure everything is ready before they ask. There's no time to build systems from scratch — the system exists, and now you run it. This module puts you inside the daily ingest routine of an active production. You'll work through a real-world dailies scenario: clearing incoming footage for integrity, getting clips organized and labeled, building the string-outs and selects the editor needs to start cutting, and syncing dual-system audio before problems compound. Speed matters here, but so does accuracy — and knowing which one to prioritize when they're in tension.
Proxies, Multi-Camera, and When Things Break
- Assistant editors often manage technically complex workflows that allow editors to work efficiently with large media files. Proxy pipelines and multi-camera sequences are common solutions, but these workflows also introduce new technical challenges. In this module, you’ll learn how to build and manage proxy media, organize multi-camera sequences, and approach technical problems using a structured diagnostic process.
Editorial Support, Audio Prep, and Closing the Production Day
- While editors are cutting, assistant editors maintain the technical structure that keeps the project reliable. This includes managing audio track organization, preparing temporary sound elements, and maintaining sequence versioning and changelogs. In this module, you’ll learn how assistant editors support the editorial process while keeping projects organized across days or weeks of production.
