Learning to “see” these wastes changes how you interpret everyday processes, whether in manufacturing, services, or even administrative work.

Another key concept is continuous improvement (kaizen). Rather than relying on large, disruptive changes, Lean encourages small, ongoing improvements driven by the people closest to the process. This makes improvement more sustainable and practical, because employees actively participate in refining their own work systems.

The idea of flow is also central. Lean emphasizes that work should move smoothly from one step to another without delays or bottlenecks. This connects directly to queueing concepts—high utilization and variability often create waiting lines, even when resources are busy most of the time.

Tools like 5S (Sort, Set in order, Shine, Standardize, Sustain) help create organized and efficient workplaces, while value stream mapping helps visualize how work actually moves and where delays occur. I have used this tools to make my work more efficient.

A personal takeaway from Lean fundamentals is that efficiency is not only about working faster, but about working smarter by reducing variability and unnecessary steps. It also highlights the importance of respect for people—since those doing the work often have the best insights into how it can be improved.

Overall, Lean Production Fundamentals provides a practical and mindset-shifting framework that applies far beyond factories. It is especially valuable in service systems, where delays and variability often have a major impact on customer experience

I found this course to be very practical and easy to follow. The concepts of variability, waiting time, Little’s Law, and resource utilization were explained in a clear way with real-life examples, making them easy to understand even for learners who are new to Lean management.

As someone with an engineering and project coordination background who is transitioning into Quality Management, I chose this course to build a stronger understanding of Lean principles and process improvement. It has given me a better appreciation of how variability and resource utilization affect operational performance and customer experience.

I believe the knowledge from this course will be valuable in my future career, particularly in quality, continuous improvement, and operational excellence roles. I would recommend it to anyone looking to develop a solid foundation in Lean thinking and process optimization.

I just finished Lean Production Fundamentals and it turned out more useful than I expected. TUM doesn't waste time on filler, it goes straight into examples which made concepts like bottlenecks, Little's Law, and the Kingman equation click a lot faster than they would have on paper alone.

The process analysis part was what I got the most out of: building a process flow diagram, finding the bottleneck, calculating resource utilization. These are things you can actually apply. I have an engineering background, so mapping the capacity analysis and Little's Law sections onto real production scenarios in my field wasn't hard at all.

My one gripe is that the course stays at a fairly basic level. It covers the 3M's, TIMWOOD, and Takt Time well, but it doesn't get into the improvement/implementation side — for that you need Advanced Lean Production. Still, if you want a solid entry point into process thinking, I'd recommend it without hesitation.
