Effective EHR use goes beyond data entry and navigation. This course teaches you how EHR data supports quality improvement, regulatory compliance, and organizational decision-making, and what you can do to strengthen it. You will learn to recognize how your documentation practices connect to quality reporting, troubleshoot common EHR system challenges using a structured approach, and support data quality as a shared team responsibility. The course also examines how organizational decisions shape EHR system design and how you can help colleagues build consistent, accurate EHR practices. Through realistic scenarios in primary care clinics, community hospitals, and ambulatory care centers, you will practice responding to operational issues, identifying data quality gaps, and improving EHR system effectiveness. Designed for health information technicians, clinical documentation specialists, medical records coordinators, and senior front office staff, this course helps you move from competent EHR use to active contribution.

Syllabus

  • EHR Systems in Quality and Compliance
    • Every entry you make in an EHR becomes part of a larger data picture that your organization depends on. In this module, you will explore what happens to that data after you enter it: how it feeds into quality measurement, patient safety initiatives, and compliance reporting. You will examine how documentation accuracy and completeness directly shape what your organization can report, measure, and improve. Through realistic scenarios, you will identify how your everyday EHR decisions contribute to organizational quality and compliance goals. By the end of this module, you will be able to explain how your documentation practices connect to the quality and compliance outcomes your organization is accountable for.
  • EHR System Challenges and Troubleshooting
    • EHR systems don't always work the way they should, and how you respond matters. In this module, you will move beyond recognizing data entry errors to developing structured problem-solving skills for the broader range of system challenges that arise in operational healthcare settings. You will examine how to distinguish between user-side issues, workflow breakdowns, and system-side issues, apply a structured troubleshooting approach before escalating, and communicate system concerns to IT in a way that enables fast resolution. The module also addresses how standardized workflows protect against recurring disruptions. By the end of this module, you will be able to identify what kind of problem you are facing, respond appropriately, and contribute to system stability rather than working around it.
  • Data Quality, Training, and Operational Support
    • Maintaining data quality is an ongoing shared responsibility across every role that touches the EHR. In this module, you move from understanding what data quality problems are to understanding how they are sustained, prevented, and corrected across an organization. You will examine how variation in how different staff members use the EHR creates systemic data quality risks, how to support colleagues and new users in building consistent practices, and how to interpret the system setup as a reflection of deliberate organizational decisions. By the end of this module, you will be able to contribute to data quality as a team responsibility and support EHR effectiveness through consistent practice that helps the system work better for everyone.
  • Final Project, Exam, and Wrap-Up
    • In this final module, you will consolidate your learning by completing a comprehensive final project. The project presents a realistic healthcare scenario involving interconnected EHR challenges, including data quality issues, recurring system disruptions, inconsistent user practices, and upcoming reporting requirements. You will apply the concepts and approaches learned throughout the course to analyze the situation, identify underlying causes, and recommend appropriate operational responses. This exercise allows you to demonstrate your understanding of EHR quality support, troubleshooting approaches, workflow consistency, and data integrity practices. The module concludes with a course summary, a glossary of key terms, and a final exam that assesses your overall understanding of EHR system effectiveness and quality.
