The modern HVAC technician knows that a system is only as reliable as its smallest components. While massive compressors and furnaces often get the spotlight, the "little things" are what truly ensure operational success and long-term performance. This course provides a comprehensive deep dive into the essential supplies and peripheral equipment that play a major role in every professional installation and maintenance call. By completing this course, you will gain the technical literacy needed to navigate supply houses with confidence and ensure your installations are leak-proof, efficient, and user-friendly. Move beyond basic mechanical knowledge and master the intricate details that separate a standard technician from a true HVAC expert.

Syllabus

  • Thermostats
    • This module introduces the thermostat as the "remote control" for an HVAC system, responsible for managing system operations through a network of color-coded wires. Technicians will learn how to read wire gauges and strand counts, such as 18/3 wire, and understand how each strand connects to specific terminals. The module also explores various thermostat types that offer remote control and significant energy savings.
  • Condensate Pumps
    • Heating and cooling systems generate condensation that must be effectively drained to prevent property damage. This module explains how condensate pumps serve as a vital solution when a system cannot rely on gravity, such as units located in basements or specific mini-split configurations. Technicians will learn about different pump sizes, the specialized requirements for high-efficiency furnaces and the essential safety mechanisms that protect a home from flooding.
  • Installation Supplies
    • This module provides an overview of the essential peripheral supplies required for a professional HVAC installation. Technicians will learn about electrical components like 30 and 60-amp disconnects and pre-built electrical whips, as well as structural supports like condenser pads and risers designed for winter operation. The module also covers specialized mounting hardware for various scenarios, including wall-mounted brackets for mini-splits and roof curbs for rooftop units, ensuring all power, gas, and refrigerant lines are properly supported and meet local building codes.
  • Line Sets
    • This module covers the fundamental role of copper line sets in transporting refrigerant between the indoor and outdoor components of an HVAC system. Technicians will learn how to read line set dimensions and understand the specific insulation requirements for both standard split and mini-split systems. Additionally, the module details the supplies and techniques required for professional brazing, including the use of nitrogen to protect the copper's interior from high-temperature scale formation.
  • Final Knowledge Check
    • This final knowledge check is designed to reinforce key concepts from the lesson and assess your understanding. You’ll apply what you’ve learned through a series of multiple choice questions, helping ensure you’re confident and ready to move forward.
