Master procedural modeling in Houdini by building and refining procedural watch assets through practical, hands-on projects. This course guides you from the fundamentals of Houdini's node-based workflow to creating reusable Digital Assets, helping you develop flexible, non-destructive modeling techniques that can be adapted without rebuilding geometry from scratch. You will begin by learning the principles of procedural modeling, creating procedural numbers and symbols, and using essential SOP nodes such as Resample, Polywire, and Sweep to construct precise parametric geometry. As you progress, you will explore advanced geometry techniques with the Skin SOP, ramp and Chramp functions, and curve-driven workflows to model watch hands and refine complex shapes. Finally, you will learn to centralize parameters with channel referencing, organize geometry using grouping and Boolean operations, apply the Principle Shader, and package your work into reusable Digital Assets for efficient production workflows. This course is designed for learners transitioning from traditional 3D modeling to Houdini, as well as professionals seeking more efficient procedural workflows. By the end of the course, you will be able to create production-ready procedural assets, build reusable modeling systems, refine geometry with parametric controls, and confidently implement Houdini's procedural asset development workflow in your own projects.

Syllabus

  • Advanced Procedural Foundations
    • This module introduces advanced procedural modeling techniques in Houdini, focusing on Boolean operations, chain setups, and point creation. Learners explore how to create mechanical components with flexibility, efficiency, and full procedural control.
  • Attribute Control and Grouping
    • This module dives into attribute manipulation, extrusion, beveling, and grouping techniques. Students gain the skills to refine models and organize geometry with powerful attribute-driven workflows in Houdini.
  • VEX, VOPs, and Looping Structures
    • This module emphasizes the power of VEX, VOPs, and looping systems in procedural design. Learners explore iteration, orientation, attribute transfer, and proximity-based attributes to build flexible systems.
  • Procedural Gear and Pattern Design
    • This module covers gear modeling, extrusion groups, and mathematical functions for procedural pattern creation. Students will design gears, pivots, and spirals while mastering attribute-driven modeling approaches.
  • Final Assembly, Animation, and Rendering
    • The final module integrates all components into a complete project, covering animation controls, screw modeling, VDB effects, and rendering. Learners finish with fully procedural animated assets ready for presentation.
