This course introduces the foundational theories of management and human resource management, and shows how they apply to healthcare quality improvement and patient safety. You'll start with the classic thinkers who shaped modern management — Taylor, Fayol, Weber, McGregor, and Maslow — before exploring modern lenses for analyzing organizations, from structure and systems to leadership and culture. From there, you'll dive into core human resource management practices, including how organizations design fair and motivating pay systems. In the final two modules, you'll apply these ideas directly to healthcare: exploring the theories behind quality improvement, and the practical frameworks — from the Swiss Cheese Model to patient safety culture surveys — that hospitals use to keep patients safe. Whether you're a healthcare professional, an aspiring manager, or simply curious about how organizations work, this course will give you the grounding to think more clearly about management, and to see the systems behind the decisions made around you every day.

Syllabus

  • Foundation of Management Theory
    • This module explores the origins of management as a discipline — from Adam Smith's division of labor to Fayol's principles, Weber's bureaucracy, and Taylor's scientific management. It also covers the shift toward human-centered thinking through the Hawthorne Effect, McGregor's Theory X/Y, and Maslow's hierarchy of needs, tracing how ideas about organizing work evolved over time.
  • Organizational Management: From Classical Theories to System Perspective
    • This module explores modern lenses for analyzing organizations: structural theory (Mintzberg), organizational economics (agency, transaction cost, and game theory), systems theory, leadership models (Ohio State studies), and organizational culture (Schein, Ouchi's Theory Z). It equips you to view any organization through structural, economic, systemic, and cultural perspectives.
  • Basic of Human Resource Management
    • This module explores why HRM matters and how it fits into overall management. It covers the historical shift from personnel administration to strategic HRM, core HR functions (recruiting, training, appraising, compensating), line vs. staff roles, and today's changing HR environment, including globalization, technology, and high-performance work systems.
  • HR Management: Pay Systems
    • This module explores how organizations design compensation systems. It covers direct vs. indirect pay, pay schemes (job-based, seniority, performance, skill-based), equity theory and its impact on fairness, the steps for establishing pay rates, and competency-based pay — including its practical benefits and drawbacks.
  • Hospital Quality Enhancement
    • This module explores the theoretical foundations of healthcare quality. It covers definitions and dimensions of quality (technical vs. functional), Donabedian's structure-process-outcome model, Total Quality Management (TQM), the PDCA cycle, Juran's cost of quality, and how these concepts translate into quality control circles and clinical pathways in Taiwan.
  • Advancing Healthcare: Progress, Initiatives, and Patient-Centered In...
    • This module includes the "To Err is Human" report, the Swiss Cheese Model, and patient safety culture surveys (SOPS, SAQ). These concepts explain how safety incidents result from systemic gaps rather than individual blame, and how healthcare organizations measure and strengthen safety culture.
