This course teaches Power BI dashboards, data modeling, and business intelligence reporting using real-world data. Power BI may seem like a more advanced environment, but many of its tools and concepts will feel familiar to Excel users. With this foundational course, you’ll learn how to model data, create effective visualizations, and make data-driven business decisions using large volumes of data in Power BI. We will help you build core Power BI knowledge and skills*, including: • Importing data from Excel and other locations into Power BI. • Understanding the Power BI environment and its three Views. • Building beginner-to-moderate level skills for navigating the Power BI product. • Exploring influential relationships within datasets. • Designing Power BI visuals, reports, and dashboards. • Sharing, presenting, and collaborating on dashboards in Power BI Service. * Please note that the full range of features are only available while using Microsoft Work/School accounts Who Should Take This Course: - Business students - Small business owners - Business and operations professionals - Analysts and project managers - Anyone interested in making data-driven business decisions Course duration is approximately four hours. Learning is divided into five modules, the sixth being a cumulative assessment. The curriculum design includes video lessons, interactive learning using short, how-to video tutorials, and practice opportunities using COMPLEMENTARY DATASETS. Join us as you begin your journey in Business Intelligence with Power BI. This course is designed for professionals using Microsoft 365 in a workplace environment. Some features may require a business/enterprise subscription. Please note that Microsoft 365 has different versions and subscription levels, so your interface and available features may differ depending on the plan you are using.

Syllabus

Introduction to Power BI and Power BI Table View
- Welcome! Power BI is a Microsoft business intelligence (BI) tool that helps you turn data into useful insights for better business decisions. If you’re familiar with Excel, you may wonder what Power BI offers that Excel doesn’t. In simple terms, Power BI analyzes your data and turns it into interactive, shareable reports and visuals that help you identify trends, explore relationships, and make informed decisions. In this course, you’ll learn the basics of Power BI, starting with how to import and clean data, so you can ultimately work with it to explore relationships, create visuals and reports, and build dashboards to share and collaborate in Power BI Service.
Model Data in Power BI
- Model your data to turn raw information into meaningful insights. Now that you’ve imported and cleaned your data, you can define relationships, track performance, and compare results to goals. In this module, you’ll learn the basics of data modeling, explore the Model View, and learn how relationships connect your data and support visualizations. You’ll also practice viewing, editing, removing, and creating relationships. Once your model is ready, you’ll move to the Report View to create visualizations such as charts, graphs, and maps. Each visual type highlights different insights, helping you communicate your data clearly.
Begin Visualizing Data in Power BI
- Visualizations, or visuals, turn your data into charts, tables, and other visual representations that make insights easier to see and share. In Power BI, these visuals are created in the Report view, where you can customize them to highlight trends, compare metrics, and communicate your findings clearly. This module will introduce you to the Report view and show you how to add, format, and adjust visualizations to make your data more actionable.
Work with Different Types of Visualizations
- Choosing the right visualization is a key step in turning data into insight. Different visuals are designed to highlight different types of information, from key metrics and trends to comparisons and relationships within your data. Understanding how and when to use each visual helps you communicate findings clearly. In this module, you’ll explore common text-based and chart-based visualizations available in Power BI. You’ll learn what these visualizations are designed to show, how to create them in the Report view, and when one visual may be more effective than another.
Work with Dashboards in Power BI Online
- Once you are satisfied with your data, you are ready to publish it to Power BI Service, which is also known as Power BI Online. Here your data is stored in your own personal workspace that can only be accessed by you. You will also have the ability to create a dashboard, where critical metrics captured across multiple reports and datasets are displayed on a single page or canvas. But why keep all this data to yourself? Power BI Service makes sharing your data with your colleagues an easy and intuitive process!
Cumulative Assessment
