Overview

This interdisciplinary course equips students and professionals with the theoretical frameworks and practical skills needed to navigate complex conflicts, negotiate effectively, and manage crises in diverse contexts. Through a blend of academic rigor and real-world case studies, participants will explore leadership dynamics, mediation strategies, gender inclusivity, and democratic governance in crisis scenarios. The course is structured across five immersive modules, each addressing critical dimensions of modern conflict and crisis management.

Syllabus

Leadership in Conflict Resolution

In this module, you will learn about the varying connotations of peace, conflict, and war. You will understand the connotation of peace that every age has its particular kind of war, with its own limiting conditions and its own particular pre-conceptions. You will be able to acknowledge the Grey Zone Conflict and examine the role and nuances of leadership with a special focus on ’Societies in Transition.’ Further, you will be able to understand the various nuances of conflict prevention. You gain insights into the important role played by the UN, including its peacekeeping and peace enforcement missions. Lastly, you will explore the nature and character of war, the seven distinct ways in which the parties can live with or dissolve their incompatibility, and the theme of peace building.

Negotiations and Mediation

In this module, you will learn about the framework of negotiations and negotiation techniques. You will gain an understanding of track-II diplomacy and mediation/third-party involvement and complexity in international negotiations. You will gain insights into human rights and international law. You will also be introduced to the aspects of disarmament and arms control. Finally, you will be able to understand the process of negotiation.

Crisis Management

In this module, you will learn about crisis management and the three elements common to a crisis, which are: threat to the organization, the element of surprise, and a short decision time. You will explore the challenges of adapting approaches that enable preparation for response to the unknown that the crisis requires. You will also learn about building coalitions and managing domestic discord, including when and why one should form or join a coalition. Further, you will gain insights into the local as well as global lessons of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Gendered Understanding of Conflict and Leadership

In this module, you will explore the integration of gender perspectives and concerns into all phases of humanitarian work- encompassing preparedness, response, and recovery efforts. You will be introduced to the importance of conducting thorough gender-sensitive assessments to identify the specific requirements of different genders and tailoring humanitarian responses accordingly. The module highlights the significance of leadership that promotes gender equality within humanitarian organizations and the need for accountability mechanisms to ensure that gender-responsive actions are carried out effectively.

Justice, Legitimacy, and Democracy in Crisis Management

This module aims to equip students with an intellectual capability to analyze and articulate the integral role of justice, legitimacy, and democracy in the context of crisis management. This module will explore how democratic institutions and processes contribute to managing crises effectively while ensuring that justice and legitimacy are upheld. Students will examine the interplay between crisis management and democratic governance, with a focus on maintaining public trust and accountability. The module will also delve into the mechanisms through which justice can be administered during and after a crisis, and the importance of upholding human rights and democratic principles in times of global turmoil.
