This course specialization provides a structured and industry-oriented understanding of steam power plant engineering, covering the complete process from steam generation to power production and emission control. It begins with the fundamentals of steam generation, including boiler definition, types, auxiliaries, and detailed study of steam generators. The course covers Fluidized Bed Combustion boilers and Pulverized Coal–fired steam generators, with technical emphasis on subcritical and supercritical steam generators and their circulation systems. Key topics include fuel firing systems, heat transfer, efficiency assessment, air and draft systems, power station fans, air heaters, soot blowers, and coal milling systems, including feeders and pulverizers. Environmental control is addressed through overviews of Electrostatic Precipitators, bag filters, Flue Gas Desulphurization systems, and NOx reduction techniques using SCR and SNCR. The specialization also introduces steam turbines, their types, major components, auxiliary systems, condenser, condensate, and feedwater systems, providing an integrated view of thermal power plant operation.

Syllabus

  • Coal Based Power Plant: Steam Generator and its Auxiliaries: I
    • This module provides a comprehensive understanding of steam generation principles and the major systems associated with coal-based power plant steam generators. It covers the concept of steam generation, boiler definitions and classifications, steam generator construction, and different combustion technologies such as fluidized bed combustion and pulverized coal-fired steam generators. The module also explains subcritical and supercritical steam generators, their circulation systems, fuel firing systems, heat transfer mechanisms, steam generator efficiency, air and draft systems, power station fans, air heaters, and soot blowers
  • Coal Based Power Plant - Steam Generator Auxiliaries: II and Emission Control
    • This module provides detailed knowledge of steam generator auxiliary systems associated with coal preparation and emission control in coal-based power plants. It covers coal milling systems, types of coal feeders, coal pulverizers and their major components, and the principles of emission control technologies. The module also introduces flue gas desulphurization (FGD) systems, selective catalytic reduction (SCR) and selective non-catalytic reduction (SNCR) systems for NOx reduction, electrostatic precipitators (ESP), bag filters, their operating principles, layouts, and major components.
  • Power Plant Steam Turbine and Auxiliary Systems
    • This module provides a fundamental understanding of steam turbines and their auxiliary systems used in thermal power plants. It covers the working principles and classifications of steam turbines, major turbine components such as casings, rotors, blades, bearings, couplings, and turning gears. The module also explains turbine auxiliary systems including lubricating oil systems, lube oil purification, electrohydraulic control systems, gland steam systems, condensers, condensate systems, and feed water systems with their major equipment.
