This Course provides an in-depth understanding of steam turbine thermodynamics, design principles, and control systems in modern thermal power plants. It begins with the fundamentals of turbine work-done, efficiency calculations, Willan’s equation, blade and stage efficiency, reheat factors, degree of reaction, and selection of blade profiles. Key design aspects, considerations, and common losses in steam turbines are covered to ensure optimal performance. The course also explores steam turbine valves, including main steam stop valves, HP governor valves, IP reheat and intercept valves, their components, arrangements, actuation, and control mechanisms. Learners gain practical knowledge of valve management, turbine governing systems, and evolution of governing technologies. Detailed coverage of Electrohydraulic (EH) oil systems includes system components, speed and load control mechanisms, overspeed protection, trip functions, and maintenance procedures. This specialization equips learners with the skills to design, operate, and manage steam turbines efficiently, ensuring precise control, safety, and optimal performance in power plant operations.

Syllabus

  • Thermodynamics and Design of Steam Turbine
    • This module provides a detailed understanding of steam turbine thermodynamics, performance analysis, and design considerations. It covers steam turbine work output, efficiency calculations, Willan’s equation, blade efficiency, stage efficiency, reheat factor, and the various losses occurring in steam turbines. The module also introduces important turbine design aspects such as degree of reaction, blade design principles, blade profile selection, and engineering considerations required for achieving reliable and efficient turbine performance.
  • Steam Turbine Valves
    • This module provides comprehensive knowledge of steam turbine valve systems, their construction, operation, and control mechanisms. It covers different types of steam turbine valves including main steam stop valves, high-pressure turbine governor valves, intermediate-pressure reheat stop valves, and intercept valves. The module explains valve components, arrangements, functions, actuator systems, control mechanisms, control philosophy, and valve management practices required for safe and efficient turbine operation.
  • Steam Turbine Governing
    • This module provides an understanding of steam turbine governing systems used to control turbine speed, load, and safe operation. It covers the introduction and types of governing systems, the evolution of turbine governing technology, electrohydraulic (EH) oil systems, system components, speed control during turbine start-up, load control mechanisms, overspeed protection, trip systems, and maintenance aspects including overhauling and inspection of EH oil systems.
