This course is designed to help students identify, develop, and apply transferable skills that are essential for both academic success and professional advancement. Through the use of innovative learning modules that contain practical real-world scenarios, students will learn how to harness these skills to navigate various challenges in their academic and professional journeys. Learning Outcomes Upon completing this course, learners will be able to: Identify and Understand: Recognize key transferable skills such as communication, problem-solving, teamwork, and adaptability, etc. and understand their significance in various contexts. Develop and Apply: Enhance and effectively apply these skills in academic projects, professional environments, and everyday challenges. Analyze Real-World Scenarios: Apply transferable skills to real-world problems and case studies, gaining practical insights and experience. Reflect and Self-Assess: Conduct ongoing self-assessments to identify strengths and areas for improvement, fostering continuous personal and professional growth.

Syllabus

  • Project Introduction & Inspiration
    • In this module, we share the course structure and discuss what to focus on throughout the course in order to make the most of the lectures, case studies, readings, discussions, and culminating project. We also share a recruiter's perspective on the value placed on transferable skills and how to best prepare for a professional transition.
  • Guiding Principles
    • This week is about setting a foundation for success in life by exploring essential core principles and transferable skills. You will be introduced to ten key ethical principles and core values that guide behavior in personal and professional contexts. We discuss how they influence decision-making, relationship building, and conducting yourself responsibly.
  • Working with Others
    • In this module, we cover skills for collaborating and communicating effectively: Verbal Communication, Written Communication, Teamwork and Collaboration, Emotional Intelligence, and Global Perspective. These skills help individuals work more effectively with others, navigate diverse settings, and build positive professional and personal relationships.
  • Navigating Complexity
    • We introduce research skills, attention to details, and technical skills in this module. These skills are helpful in solving problems, decision-making, ensuring accuracy, identifying inconsistencies, and data analysis.
  • Essential Digital Skills
    • Artificial intelligence (AI) is evolving significantly. It offers benefits and can enhance productivity and problem-solving capabilities. We explore AI and cyber awareness, along with computer literacy in this module.
  • Essential Thinking Skills
    • In this module, we review how critical and innovative thinking can improve future decisions and drive progress, improving your competitive edge. Problem-solving and quantitative reasoning skills are also covered.
  • Essential Personal Skills
    • Time management, self-motivation, resilience, adaptability, and perseverance are skills that make us stronger and more capable than some peers. We explore ways to improve your personal growth this week.
  • Empowerment Reflection Journal: Final Project
    • Over the past few weeks, you have explored, applied, and reflected on various transferable skills. This module is designed to help you consolidate your learning and share your experiences with your peers. By reflecting on your journey, you will gain deeper insights into your personal growth and the application of transferable skills in different contexts.
