This course specialization provides an in-depth and industry-oriented understanding of boiler layout, design, pressure parts, and structural support systems used in thermal power plants. It begins with an overview of boiler plant layout, covering ground-mounted equipment, fuel preparation areas, firing systems, critical piping, fans, ducting, and chimney interfaces. The course explains customer specifications, basic boiler design inputs, heat duty, efficiency, and combustion calculations, along with guidelines for furnace selection, coal pulverizers, and heating surface design. Detailed coverage is given to pressure part arrangements for stoker-fired, fluidized bed, circulating fluidized bed, and pulverized coal–fired boilers. Key components such as economizers, steam drums, water walls, superheaters, reheaters, headers, and desuperheaters are explained with construction and flow paths. The specialization also focuses on boiler supports, buckstays, materials, metallurgy, insulation, refractory, and applicable codes and standards. Structural engineering aspects include boiler structures, platforms, galleries, loadings, analysis, design, and structural connections, enabling learners to understand safe, reliable, and optimized boiler design.

Syllabus

  • Boiler Plant Layout & Boiler Design
    • This module provides a comprehensive understanding of the overall boiler plant layout, design philosophy, and arrangement of major equipment in thermal power plants. It covers the layout of ground-mounted equipment, mill maintenance areas, feeder and tripper floors, firing systems, critical piping routes, soot blower arrangements, and the flow path from FD/PA fans to the chimney. The module also explains customer specifications, basic inputs required for boiler design, heat duty and efficiency calculations, combustion calculations, coal pulverizer selection, furnace selection, heating surface selection (superheater, reheater, and economizer), and practical considerations related to boiler footprint, structural planning, equipment arrangement, ducting, piping, coal routing, and platform layout.
  • Major Components of Boiler (Pressure Components and its Supports)
    • This module provides detailed knowledge of boiler pressure components, their construction, functions, and supporting arrangements used in different types of boilers. It covers pressure part arrangements of stoker-fired, fluidized bed combustion, circulating fluidized bed combustion, and pulverized coal-fired boilers. The module explains the construction and working principles of economizers, steam drums, water separators, furnace water walls, superheaters, reheaters, desuperheaters, headers, manifolds, and buckstays. It also covers pressure part supporting systems, types of boiler supports, boiler materials and metallurgy, applicable codes and standards, insulation, and refractory systems.
  • Boiler Structure
    • This module provides an understanding of boiler structural systems, their functions, design considerations, and construction aspects. It covers the purpose of boiler structures, layout considerations, platforms and galleries, structural framing, steel structural components, material selection, boiler loadings, structural analysis, design methodologies, and structural connection systems required to support boiler equipment safely and effectively.
