Develop a firm understanding of human anatomy with Integument, Gastrointestinal, Pelvic, and Endocrine Anatomy. In this course, you will explore the anatomy of four major organ systems and one region: the integumentary, gastrointestinal, and endocrine systems, and the pelvic region. Examine the key structural features of each, such as the layers of the skin, the organization of the gastrointestinal tract, the arrangement of internal pelvic viscera, and the glands and tissues that make up the endocrine system. You will analyze how these components relate to one another in structure and function. By the end of the course, you will be able to describe the major anatomical components of these systems, explain their primary functions, and distinguish among interrelated structures within and across systems. This is the fourth course in the Anatomy course series, an introduction to the major functions of the human body, from the musculoskeletal and nervous systems, to the function of the heart, lungs, and hormonal pathways.

Syllabus

Welcome and Integumentary Anatomy
- Before exploring integumentary, gastrointestinal, pelvic, and endocrine anatomy, it is important to understand the basic anatomical terminology and concepts used throughout the course. Lesson 0 provides this foundational material and may be skipped by learners who are already familiar with these concepts. The Integumentary Anatomy module provides a comprehensive introduction to the structure and function of the integumentary system. You will examine the layers of the skin and their basic histological features, as well as the skin's roles in protection, sensation, thermoregulation, and other essential functions. The module also explores normal and pathological variations in skin color and surface markings, introduces the structure and function of hair, nails, and cutaneous glands, and concludes with an overview of common skin cancers and the classification of burns based on depth and severity.
Gastrointestinal Anatomy
- This module provides a comprehensive overview of the gastrointestinal system. You will explore the anatomy of its major organs and supporting structures, and learn how these components work together, as well as how they interact with other body systems. By the end of the module, you will be able to identify the key features of the gastrointestinal system and explain how it functions within the human body.
Pelvic Anatomy
- This module provides a comprehensive overview of the anatomy related to the pelvic region. It reviews the anatomy and physiology of the pelvis, including the continuum of pelvic traits and the functions of both internal and external pelvic organs. You will learn to identify key pelvic structures, understand their clinical relevance, and examine the neurovascular components of the pelvis. The module also introduces the basic physiology of sexual response within the human body.
Endocrine Anatomy
- This module provides an overview of the endocrine system and its major anatomical structures. You will learn to identify the endocrine organs as well as recognize key hormones produced by these organs. While the module does not focus on cellular physiology, it guides you in identifying and analyzing the anatomical features that comprise the endocrine system within the human body.
