Despite their vast differences, the cardiovascular, respiratory, and urinary systems are interrelated. This course focuses on the structures and functions of each system. You will understand how the heart and vasculature distribute blood to target organs and tissues, how the body moves air for gas exchange, how the kidneys dynamically create urine, and how these systems work to maintain homeostasis through their effects on the blood. This is the second course in the Anatomy course series, an introduction to the major functions of the human body, from the musculoskeletal and nervous systems to the heart, lungs, and hormonal pathways.

Syllabus

Welcome and Cardiovascular Anatomy I
- Before exploring cardiovascular, respiratory, and urinary anatomy, it is important to understand the basic anatomical terminology and concepts used throughout the course. This module provides this foundational material and may be skipped by learners who are already familiar with these concepts. The Cardiovascular Anatomy module introduces the major components of the cardiovascular system: the blood, heart, and blood vessels. You will examine the anatomy of the heart and relate its structures to their functions in pumping blood throughout the body. The module also explores the organization of the arterial and venous systems, providing an overview of the major blood vessels and the pathways they follow to deliver blood to tissues and return it to the heart.
Cardiovascular Anatomy II
- The cardiovascular system works closely with the lymphatic system especially at the level of vasculature and blood. This module provides detailed descriptions of the constituents of the blood and related pathologies, introduces the lymphatic system, and details the patterns of lymph movement and drainage among principal groups of lymph nodes.
Respiratory Anatomy
- The respiratory system is responsible for the movement of air and all the ramifications that entails for the body. Chiefly, respiration, conduction of odorants for olfaction (smell), and vocalization. This module introduces students to the anatomy of the respiratory system, discusses structures in the context of their functions, details the pathways by which air is moved between the external environment and the lungs, and the opportunities and challenges of sharing this pathway with the spaces that also conduct materials for the digestive system.
Urinary Anatomy
- The urinary system is the principal system that filters the blood and maintains fluid balance. This module details the structure and function of the kidneys, the histology of the kidneys, the urine conduction pathway, and how urine is stored and released by the body.
