Explore how the human body moves with Musculoskeletal Anatomy. This course offers a comprehensive study of the human musculoskeletal system. You will explore the functions and structure of bones and joints, including osseous tissue components, bone growth, and common disorders such as fractures, osteoporosis, and arthritis. You’ll learn about muscular tissue properties and muscle contraction mechanisms. The course covers the anatomical features of the axial and appendicular skeletons, major joints, their classifications, and the body's muscles, through both lectures and optional extended reality experiences. This is the first course in the Anatomy course series, an introduction to the major functions of the human body, from the musculoskeletal and nervous systems, to the function of the heart, lungs, and hormonal pathways.

Syllabus

  • Skeletal System
    • Before exploring musculoskeletal anatomy, it is important to understand the basic anatomical terminology and concepts used throughout the course. Lesson 0 provides this foundational material and may be skipped by learners who are already familiar with these concepts. The Skeletal System module provides an in-depth introduction to the structure and function of the skeletal system. You will examine the composition of bone, distinguish between compact and spongy bone, and explore the processes of bone growth and remodeling. The module also covers the roles of minerals, vitamins, and hormones in maintaining bone health, introduces common bone disorders, and examines the major bone types, anatomical features, and key landmarks of the axial and appendicular skeleton.
  • Joints
    • In the Joints module, you will delve into joint anatomy and biomechanics. You will learn to classify major joints, identify synovial joint structures, understand the factors affecting joint movement, and distinguish between the main types of arthritis. Additionally, the course examines the anatomy and clinical aspects of the major joints of the body, such as the shoulder, hip, and knee.
  • Skeletal Muscle
    • In the Skeletal Muscle module, you will explore skeletal muscular tissue, focusing on its properties and functions, along with the important role of connective tissue in overall movement. You will study muscle fiber anatomy, the muscle contraction process and roles of motor neurons and motor units. The module covers muscle types and functional groups, as well as location, function, and clinical considerations of key muscles and muscle groups of the body.
