ABOUT THE COURSE:The course is to develop an understanding about the basics of Library & Information Science, significance of libraries in a society, and the national and international bodies fostering the growth and development of libraries. It will realize the fundamental concepts, aims and objectives and importance of libraries in a society, will highlight the professional ethics of librarianship, five laws of library science, concept of Library legislation and features of some important library acts. Week 1: Library: Concept, Definition, Objectives, Importance and Functions
Week 2:Librarianship as a profession, Professional Ethics
Week 3:Five Laws of Library Science and their implications
Week 4:Library Legislation: Need and Essential Features
Week 5:Library Acts in India with Special Reference to Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, West Bengal, and Uttar Pradesh
Week 6:Features and Functions of Academic Libraries
Week 7:Features and Functions of Public Libraries
Week 8:Features and Functions of National Libraries
Week 9:Features and Functions of Special Libraries
Week 10:Resource Sharing in Libraries, Library Committees and Policies in India, and National Knowledge Commission (NKC)
Week 11:Role of UGC in the Development of College & University Libraries in India, and Role of UNESCO and RRRLF in the development of Libraries
Week 12:Role of National and International Library Associations: ILA, IASLIC, CILIP, ALA, IFLA, ASLIB
